When it comes to the claiming game nobody is doing it better in New York than trainer David Jacobson. On Thursday’s card the meet’s leading trainer won four races, all with runners he recently claimed.
The day started off with a win in the second race with Spa City Fever ($12.60), then he won the third with Yo Blue ($8.30), the fifth race with Princess Mara ($8.90), and finally the eighth race with Sing Dixie Sing ($7.80).
The trainer has now won 17 races at the meeting with 60 starters, a 28% win clip. Next in line is Chad Brown with 10 winners from his 37 starters (27%).
Jacobson will be back at it on Friday, with starters in four races. He sends out the coupled entry of Schoolyard Dreams and Laysh Laysh Laysh in the opening race.
He also will saddle Regal Strike and Temecula Creek in the third, Sure Route in the fourth race, and he has Point Taken ready to go in the eighth if the race comes off the turf. The lone runner that will be making his first start off the claim is Sure Route, who was claimed for $62,500 and is 3-1 on the morning line.
The news coming out of Woodbine yesterday is what I have been expecting: Jockey Chantal Sutherland is coming out of retirement.
Bill Tallon of the Daily Racing Form reported that Sutherland will return to riding this summer at Del Mar.
“All of a sudden I started waking up at 4 a.m. I missed it too much; I love all the people at the racetrack,” Sutherland told Tallon.
Sutherland was a top jockey in Canada and rode Game On Dude for trainer Bob Baffert before getting replaced with Rafael Bejarano. She has 931 wins in her career with earnings of over $47 million.
Her retirement was announced last year and was leaked on twitter early by her brother. Her Twitter account (and her brothers) has not made any announcement.
Here is today’s opening from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:
BEL Race 1 Clm $35,000B (1:05 ET) 5 Strapping Groom 4-1 4 This Ones for Phil 1-1 1 Schoolyard Dreams / 1a Laysh Laysh Laysh 3-1 2 Shankopotamus 6-1
Analysis: Strapping Groom took the field gate to wire to beat $25,000 starter handicap foes last June and has been on the bench since. He had earned a career top two back beating open $35,00 claimers and has shown he can handle a wet track., The Domino barn is showing a 1 for 15 mark with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff dating back three years. He finds a good spot here for his return facing non-winners of three or a race since Jan. 1. May offer the best value for the top spot among the major contenders in this small field.
This Ones for Phil set a sharp early pace and weakened in the stretch to finish fourth in a four horse field facing Alw-3 optional claimers as the chalk. He has now been beaten at 9-5 or less five races in a row. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers and drops into a softer spot here but is going to be a light price again here.
WIN: #5 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 4,5 / 1,4,5
TRI: no play
Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 7 Md $45,000 (4:13 ET) 3 Jumpinofftheedge 12-1 4 Alysaro 2-1 5 Tony D 3-1 6 Brass Set 8-1
Analysis: Jumpinofftheeedge makes his debut for the Serpe barn that is showing a 2 for 25 mark with first timers going back three years, both pries (12-1 and 37-1). The gelding is by Discreet Cat and the first foal out of a Dixie Union mare, so we have some off track appeal top and bottom. The works look decent and he debuts with lasix.
Alysaro makes his first start since last fall where the colt was second for a $35,000 tag in his second career start. The winner of that race was The Truth and K G, who is not graded stakes placed, his last outing a third in the Bay Shore (G3) on April 6 at the Big A. The barn is 3 for 35 with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff dating back three years. I would like to see a bit more than the 2-1 morning line.
Tony D debuts for the Brown barn that is 10% winners with firsters. He is out of the stakes winner Party Cited ($376,579) who has dropped six winners including three stakes winners, top earner Ready Set ($807,789). He debuts with lasix but why is this $400,000 purchase showing up tagged in his debut for just $40,000?
WIN: #3 to win at 6-1 or better.
EX: 3,4 / 3,4,5,6
TRI: 3,4 / 3,4,5,6 / 3,4,5,6,7
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
R6: #9 So Outspoken 8-1
R7: #3 Jumpinofftheedge 12-1
R9: #5 Ten Ed 12-1
