Wise Dan wins Woodford Reserve Turf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan won the $500,000 Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic for the second straight year Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The 7-year-old gelding, trained by Charlie LoPresti and ridden by John Velazquez, edged Seek Again by a neck, running 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.73.

Wise Dan, a son of Wiseman's Ferry, paid $3. He has won 12 of his last 13 races and is 21 of 29 for his career. He is 13 of 14 on turf and 4 for 4 at Churchill Downs.

Also on the Derby undercard:

Midnight Lucky returned from an 11-month layoff to post a 4 1/2-length victory over Street Girl in the $330,600 Grade 1 Humana Distaff.

Ridden by Kentucky Oaks-winning jockey Rosie Napravnik for trainer Bob Baffert, Midnight Lucky went gate to wire and finished the seven-length test in 1:22.23. Midnight Lucky paid $5.20.

After the race, Baffert said the long term goal for Midnight Lucky is the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Global View rallied to catch Storming Inti just in time in the Grade 2 $294,500 American Turf. Global View, trained by Tom Proctor and ridden by Gary Stevens, ran 1 1/16 miles on the firm course in 1:41.65 and paid $14. It was the third American Turf victory for Stevens, who won with Demier Croise in 1998 and Unanimous Vote in 1995.

''He's got a powerful, powerful kick,'' Stevens said. ''I think he's going to be a top, top turf horse.'' Quotient was third.

In the $336,900 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, Coffee Clique and jockey Javier Castellano rallied up the rail to overtake Dame Maria for a half-length win in the Grade 2 race. Coffee Clique, trained by Brian Lynch, finished the mile in 1:34.66 and paid $13.80.

''My horse is very brave,'' Castellano said. ''Turning for home, she split horses and kept on the rail.''

Central Banker, with Corey Nakatani aboard, pulled away from a tenacious Shakin It Up after a stretch duel to win the $464,800 Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes for trainer Al Stall, Jr. Central Banker paid $23.60.
