At the Gate – Friday

Our three-day break is in the books and it off to Belmont Park on Friday for the start of the 36-day Fall Championship Meeting.

During the meet we have a total of 44 stakes worth over $10 million and seven Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races.

The first big day comes up on Sept. 29 where we have three Breeders’ Cup Challenge races— the Grade 1, $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup for the Breeders’ Cup Classic; the Grade 1, $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic in the Turf division; and the Grade 1, $350,000 Vosburgh in the Sprint division. Also on the card is the Grade 3, $200,000 Pilgrim for two-year-olds on the turf.

Today’s opening day feature on the nine race card is the $100,000 Christiecat for three-year-old fillies going six furlongs on the turf with with 11 entered and nine likely to start. Streetlady will scratch according to her connections and Lezendary is a main track only entrant.

The Jason Servis trained Miz Mayhem is the 5-2 morning line favorite and seeking her sixth win in a row. She won the Stormy Blues at Laurel Park in her last outing.

I need to look for a bit more value and landed on the lightly raced Broadway Run, who make just her fourth career start. The filly won the Coronation Cup at Saratoga in gate to wire fashion in her last outing.

Coming up tomorrow my Best Plays Report will include the stakes action from Kentucky Downs. Low takeout, big fields and all turf racing make the track very appealing to horseplayers.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package for just $99.95. It gives you a month of Belmont Park daily and my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Alw $50,000s (1:30 ET)
#1 Monaco 6-1
#2 Sanavi 1-1
#4 Trustworthy 2-1
#3 La Maquina Gris 5-1

Analysis: Monaco dueled for the early lead in the mud at Philly against $25,000 starter allowance foes and weakened to finish fifth. Two back going a mile this guy took the field gate to wire at the same level. He goes for the Kantarmaci barn that won one race at the Spa. The colt draws the rail and owns solid early and mid pace numbers. Among the top three here this guy is going to offer the best bang for the buck.

Sanavi was a game second in the slop at the Spa last out at this level in his first start after shipping in from Santa Anita. Now he goes from Rice to Englehart ho is 24% winners with newcomers to the barn. He beat $25,000 claimers two back going a mile at Santa Anita while in the Saldana barn. He fits here but the even money is on the light side.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 The Christiecat (5:18 ET)
#3 Broadway Run 7-2
#2 Miz Mayhem 5-2
#10 Mominou 10-1
#4 Tesora 5-1

Analysis: Broadway Run came off a two-month break and took the field gate to wire to win the Coronation Cup at the Spa going 5 1/2 furlongs over good ground. She graduated on the grass here in her debut in May and then ran a good second to our third choice against Alw-1 optional claimers in her first go against winners. The Terranova trainee has just three starts under her belt and appears to still have some upside. She owns solid early and mid-pace numbers and has worked sharply since her last start.

Miz Mayhem comes in here riding a five race winning streak, taking the Stormy Blues last out at Laurel Park going 5 1/2 furlongs. She goes from Plesa to Servis, the two brother-in-laws with Plesa's wife the owner of this filly. Servis is 37% winners (with a +ROI) with newcomers to the barn. She has the perfect running style for this race at six panels has not given any indication she would not be able to handle the extra ground here, her best work coming at five furlongs. She likely gets hammered in the betting with Servis now calling the shots.
