At the Gate – Sunday

Our trip up north to Woodbine panned out pretty well on Saturday as we hit two of the four stakes with a couple of good exactas although I whiffed on the Woodbine Mile (G1).

I’ll just blame jockey Jamie Spencer, who is my own personal Cooler. He was aboard my top pick Lord Glitters in the Woodbine Mile and had him too far back early and he was also aboard my top pick Hawkbill in the Northern Dancer Turf (G1) where he faded.

The two races where we did not have to worry about Spencer was the Canadian (G2) where we knocked down a $91.90 exacta and the Bold Venture with Yorkton ($12.10) my top pick and topping an exacta that paid $97.40.

We also had a $91.50 exacta in the sixth race at Belmont Park along with payoffs of $32.60 and $69.50.

I am going to sneak across the border again on Sunday as we have a pair of Grade 1 races for juveniles that are Breeders’ Cup Challenge races—the $250,000 Natalma and the $250,000 Summer.

The Natalma winner earns a spot in the field for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and the race at a mile on turf drew a full field of 14. The Euro invader La Pelosa is the 3-1 morning line favorite but I’ll try and beat her with another Euro shipper in Mintd, who is sent out by trainer Chad Brown.

The Summer winner stamps a ticket to the Breeders; Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) and we have a field of 13 lining up in another competitive race. Browns sends out the 5-2 morning line favorite Fog of War, an impressive maiden winner in his debut and he does look as if he will be tough to beat.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package for just $99.95. It gives you a month of Belmont Park daily and my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $40,000N2L (1:30 ET)
#7 Comeoncomeoncat 4-1
#6 Class Won 8-5
#5 Pirate's Treasure 6-1
#2 la Cat Warrior 7-2

Analysis: Comeoncomeoncat stalked the early pace, came with a wide bid and finished up ell while unable to get to the winner in a runner up finish, catching a racing strip that was playing to inside speed. The gelding showed speed two back against $40,000 non-winners of two, setting the early fractions before weakening to finish fifth. He makes his first start here for Schosberg barn who is showing a 1 for 10 mark first off the claim. He fits well here with his best and hoping he gets overlooked on the tote.

Class Won prompted the early pace and could not get by the winner late in a runner up finish over a speed favoring racing strip. He makes his third start of his current form cycle for the Diodoro barn that claimed this guy for $40,000 three back. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers but catches a field her with plenty of early speed and his price may end up the short side.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Clm $32,000 (4:46 ET)
#6 Astounding 3-1
#4 Lucky Ramsey 8-1
#3 Drive by Thunder 7-2
#8 Sycamore Lane 4-1

Analysis: Astounding stalked the early pace and made a mild late bid to finish third last out against $40,000 foes at the Spa off a 3 1/2 month break for the Servis barn. The ridgling drops a notch in class here in for $32,000 for the sharp barn. Two back this guy beat Alw-1 company at Monmouth Park and has now landed in the money in seven of his eight career trips on turf. He beat $40,000 non-winners of two over the grass here last year.

Lucky Ramsey exits the same race as our top pick and he was not much of a threat in a sixth-place finish at 9-1. He was making his first start off a 2 1/2 month break and was claimed out of the race by the Sharp barn that is 17% winners first off the claim. Two back over good ground here he was beaten just a neck going 1 1/4 miles. He is better than he showed last out and worth tossing in the mix here in a wide open race if he goes off near his 8-1 morning line.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Woodbine:

WO Race 7 The Natalma G1 (4:26 ET)
#10 Mintd 8-1
#8 My Gal Betty 4-1
#12 Stillwater Cove 6-1
#11 Pivottina 10-1

Analysis: Mintd looked as if she would be a player in the P.G. Johnson at the Spa on Aug. 30 but was a scratch and ships north now for the Brown barn. The filly was last seen running second in the Tipperary Stakes going five furlongs. This will be her first route try and she has enough pedigree, the first foal to race out of a Raven's Pass mare. The barn is 29% winners moving runners from sprint to route. She makes her North American debut adding lasix to the mix. Decent value if she goes off near her 8-1 morning line.

My Gal Betty has crossed the wire first in all three of her stats but was DQ'd from her win in the My Dear here two back on the fake stuff. She was a much the best winner last out in the Catch a Glimpse over yielding ground here going six furlongs. She has five sibs that have also won on turf and two are stakes winners, top earner America America ($403.050).
