At the Gate – Wednesday

Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup come out this afternoon and we will have a slightly better idea of how the fields line up although there will be a quite a few top contenders like Mind Your Biscuits that will be cross-entered in two races.

It looks as if the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) will be oversubscribed so there may be some tough decisions the Breeders’ Cup committee will have to make.

The way the fields come together is first based wins in Breeders’ Cup Challenge races, then a system of points accumulated in graded stakes races, and then for the remainder of the field it goes to the judges.

Accelerate, Discreet Lover and Pavel are in based on wins in Breeders’ Cup Challenge races. The next four based on posts are Bravazo, McKinzie, Axelrod and Lone Sailor.

The field is limited to 14, and right now it looks as if maybe 18 or 19 are still interested in making it into the big dance.

Among those is the Euro invader Roaring Lion, who will be cross entered in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), but his connections seem very interested in trying dirt in the Classic. He has won four straight Group 1 races on turf, taking the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) at Ascot on Oct. 20.

I just don’t think the committee could leave him out with his credentials even tough he has never tried dirt.

His addition would make handicapping the Classic just a little bit trickier.

Here is the opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md $40,000 (1:30 ET)
#6 For Kicks 3-1
#5 Big Mischief 2-1
#9 Bella Figura 10-1
#1 Twiga 10-1

Analysis: For Kicks drops in for a tag for the first time here for the Matz barn. Last out at Kentucky Downs against maiden special weight foes for a $134,000 purchase the filly tracked the early pace and weakened to finish fourth. She checked in fifth two back while beaten just 2 1/2 lengths and three back was fourth behind a repeat winner. The $90,000 Keeneland purchase is the first foal to race out of a Lemon Drop Kid mare. The barn is 29% winners (with a +ROI) dropping runners from maiden special to maiden claiming. Johnny V. picks up the call.

Big Mischief stalked the early pace while saving ground and weakened in the stretch to fish fourth last out in her turf debut for a $75,000 tag. She returns off a two-month break with another class drop here to $50,000. She is by Into Mischief out of a Rock Hard Ten mare that has dropped two other foals to race, no winners to date. Another move forward makes her a player here but her price may end up on the short side.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Md Sp Wt (4:42 ET)
#7 Blonde Moment 10-1
#2 Chica Boom Chic 4-1
#3 Break Curfew 2-1
#8 Waving Flags 6-1

Analysis: Blonde Moment caught slop in her debut and note she took some play, sent off at 4-1 in a field of nine despite the low profile connections. She was off poorly getting bumped and steadied and was not a threat in a ninth-place finish. She has come back with a couple of good works and willing to give her another looks here. She is out of an Empire Maker mare that has dropped two other foals to race, both winners.

Chica Boom Chic is one of two Brown firsters that has been working at Monmouth Park and that duo's last four works are identical. This gal was a $975,000 Keeneland purchase, by Tapit out of the stakes winner Miss Empire ($228,250). Her purchase price is more than three times her stablemate's who is the 2-1 morning line favorite. Not a fan of Irad on firsters, but this gal has the pedigree to be a nice one.
