Baffert Horses Lead the Way in Kentucky Derby Odds

Three of the top four horses in the latest Kentucky Derby odds at BetDSI are horses trained by Bob Baffert. The Hall of Fame trainer has Game Winner, Improbable and Roadster as his expected Kentucky Derby entrants into the race on May 4 at Churchill Downs.

BetDSI actually has Game Winner and Improbable listed as co-favorites at odds of +600, while Roadster is the co-third choice at +850 along with Maximum Security.

Let’s look at the latest Kentucky Derby odds.

It is somewhat surprising that BetDSI has Roadster listed as the co-third choice in Kentucky Derby odds considering the horse just beat Game Winner in the Santa Anita Derby. If you like Roadster to win the Kentucky Derby then now is the time to bet the horse because it is almost a given that the horse will not go off at odds of more than 8-1 on Derby day. Roadster and Game Winner are actually stablemates, and both are definite threats to win the Derby.

Roadster has three wins in four starts for Baffert and Baffert has been saying that the horse is the heir apparent to Justify who won the Triple Crown last year. Roadster won his debut in July at Del Mar but he was third in the Del Mar Futurity in September. The problem for Roadster in that race was a breathing problem that Baffert had taken care of, as Roadster had surgery after that race.

“Roadster is a light horse but always shown brilliance from day one,” Baffert said recently to the media, “We’re just lucky we were able to bring him back … I couldn’t thank the surgeon that did it enough. He’s one of the best in the business.” Roadster came back in March and won an allowance race easily and the horse rallied to beat Game Winner in the Santa Anita Derby.

If Roadster doesn’t win the Kentucky Derby then Baffert has two other horses that could in Game Winner and Improbable. Game Winner is a very talented horse that was just barely beaten by Roadster in the Santa Anita Derby. Game Winner could actually be primed for a big race in the Kentucky Derby and Improbable has been said by some people to be the best horse of the three Baffert entries.

Improbable will be racing in Saturday’s Arkansas Derby and is expected to either be the favorite or the second choice in the betting, with Omaha Beach the main competition. It should be noted that the Arkansas Derby was a springboard race for American Pharoah who won the Triple Crown in 2015 after winning the Arkansas Derby. Improbable could be taking a similar path. The race is worth 170 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and Improbable needs to finish first or second to qualify for the Derby.

"Improbable, now he has to run lights out in the Arkansas Derby. He needs to run first or second if he's going to get in the Derby," Baffert said to the media, "So I think there's more pressure now because he didn't win (the Rebel). So it comes down to points. But then again if you can't run well (in the Arkansas Derby), do you need to be in this Kentucky Derby?" Baffert has won the Arkansas Derby twice since 2012.

Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby five times and he has won the Triple Crown twice with American Pharoah and Justify. There doesn’t seem to be much doubt that one of his three horses, Game Winner, Roadster or Improbable will go off as the favorite for the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
