At the Gate – Wednesday

A normal run of the mill card at Belmont Park on Wednesday has been enhanced by a Pick 6 carryover as the wager was not hit over the last three racing days.

We start with a carryover of $500,310 and the pool should easily grow over $1 million. There is an eight-race card at Belmont Park this afternoon, so the Pick 6 starts with the third race.

Th weather looks good so it appears we will be on the grass and the first race in the Pick 6 is a $40,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Eight entered, two of those main track only entrants so we will have a field of six. Mobridge (5-2) and Harv Won’t Tap (3-1) are pretty logical.

The fourth race is a first level optional claimer on turf going six furlongs. A field of seven will head to the gate with the possible shortest priced runner on the card. The Chad Brown trained Mutakatif is the 6-5 morning line favorite.

Things get a little tough in the fifth race, a $50,000 maiden claimer going 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf course. Eleven were entered but three are MTO’s. Whiskey Is My Wine (4-1) and Crypto Gold (5-2) appears to have the most upside.

The sixth race is a state bred maiden special weight race for juveniles going five furlongs on the main track. Six were entered led by the Jonathan Thomas trained first timer Assault Breaker (2-1) and Jeremiah Englehart firster All Guns Blazing (7-2).

The final two races on the card are probably the toughest. The seventh race is a first level allowance race for state breds going six furlongs on turf. Sadie Lady (2-1) and Jaded Lady (5-2) are the two favorites.

If we get to the final race alive, we are faced with a state bred $40,000 maiden claimer which drew a field of 12. The good news is there is just one first time starter, 15-1 longshot Angels and Us.

It likely will be the race I try to go the deepest in. Gunboat Diplomacy is the 7-2 morning line favorite and is dropping in for a tag for the first time in her career.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md Sp Wt (1:30 ET)
#1 Wacky Pal 6-1
#5 Graded On a Curve 9-5
#6 Alphalfa 2-1
#9 Jimmy Jazz 5-1

Analysis: Wacky Pal
came off nearly a six month break last out for his second career start here going 1 1/4 miles. The gelding stalked the early pace while saving ground, bumped with the winner while getting caught in tight quarters and had to check nearing the 3/16's The gelding earned a decent figure in his debut last December at Gulfstream Park against open maidens in a seventh place finish. A clean trip can put him in the mix here and Saez sticks. The gelding is out of a Rahy mare that has dropped a pair of winners including one turf winner.

Graded On a Curve put in two good efforts last year, a third in his debut and then a second in a deadheat last out as the beaten favorite here over good ground last September. The Brown barn is 28% winners with runners coming back off a +180-day layoff. This guy is out of a Street Cry mare that has dropped three other foals to race including one turf winner.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Alw $65,000N1X (4:50 ET)
#10 Jaded Lady 5-2
#9 Sadie Lady 2-1
#8 Silencia 4-1
#11 Summer Squeeze 10-1

Analysis: Jaded Lady
dueled for the early lead and battled on gamely until late in a fourth-place finish at this level going seven furlongs in her first start off a 6 1/2-month layoff. This gal graduated on turf at 5 1/2 furlongs in her second career start at the Spa last summer and then ran in three stakes, a third her best finish. The cut back to six furlongs should suit her. The Englehart barn is 30% winners (with a +ROI) with runners making their second start off a +180-day layoff.

Sadie Lady set the early fractions and headed for home with the lead but could not hold off the top pair inside the final furlong in a third-place finish, beaten a length. Two back off a 4 1/2 month break she was a decent third, beaten 1 1/4 lengths. The runner up in that race was Merlins Muse, who returned to win at this level in her next outing on May 24. She makes her third start off the layoff for the Delacour barn. She owns a solid pace profile throughout and is the logical one to beat in this spot.
