Pacers vs Knicks Picks & Prediction

Not going to lie, I picked the Knicks to beat Indiana in five games – and they had me worried for a moment or two in Monday’s series opener, as the Pacers went to halftime of Game 1 with a 6-point lead, and carried a 5-point lead all the way to the 6:05 mark of the fourth quarter. But then, all of a sudden, I was immediately reminded of why I bet on New York in the first place, which is the unbreakable chemistry of the Knicks’ Villanova guard trio, and the overwhelming homecourt advantage of Madison Square Garden.

But I was never overly worried about the brief absence of those two factors. They always come to fruition in some way shape or form eventually. The main reason I spent time kicking myself during the first half of Game 1 was because, in a battle between Indiana’s 2nd-ranked offense and New York’s 10th-ranked defense, I thought the Knicks would be able to significantly reduce the gap in a home playoff environment by forcing them into a much slower and uglier play-style. But that simply didn’t happen, as the Pacers scored 117 points on 52% from the field by cranking up to the pace 95.5 in Game 1, which is a faster pace than all eight first round playoff series, with Nuggets-Lakers leading the pack at 95.3 – and if a time-traveller from the future would have told me of that before the game, I probably wouldn’t have bet on New York.

However, as we all know, many of the key factors that help decide the outcome of basketball games aren’t always visible on the stat sheet – and when the Knicks have played at home this postseason, all of those intangible factors have seemingly gone their way.

Not only is New York’s arena the World’s Most Famous Arena, but it’s also home of the World’s Most Biased Officiating in the playoffs. After ranking 14th in the NBA in free throw attempts per game (21.8) during the regular season, the Knicks rank 4th out of 16 playoff teams in free throw attempts per game (24.3) – and in a world where most teams see that number go down in the postseason, the hostility and ruthlessness of New York’s home crowd intensifies the pressure on referees and somehow draws a regular-season-whistle plus more for the home team.

In the first half of Game 1, the Pacers shot just three (3) free throws. The Knicks shot 11. Must’ve been squeaky clean defense by New York, right? No, of course not. But the Knicks finished +7 in the free throw department for the contest, and the refs didn’t feel like they owed them anything late either, as they even overturned some very questionable calls favoring the home team down the stretch – and that’s the difference between a 4-point loss and a 3-point win.

Jalen Brunson continued his run of dominance from start-to-finish for the Knicks in Game 1. He scored 43 points on 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the field in the win. But make no mistake about it, Indiana couldn’t stop any part of New York’s Villanova-3 in the second half of Monday’s contest, as Donte DiVincenzo and Josh Hart combined for 34 points on 12-of-16 shooting (75%) in the second half of Game 1 – and that’s a frightening notion for a Pacers team that simply can’t stop the bleeding at the defensive end in some matchups, ranked 24th in defensive rating (118) on the season.

I have no doubt Indiana will continue to score points throughout this series. The Pacers rank 1st in points per game (123.3) and 2nd in offensive rating (121), and their ability to play through contact and find ways to score despite the lack of whistles received on the road in Game 1 was really impressive, which equated to 117 points on north of 50% shooting. However, it still wasn’t enough to get the job done due to their poor defensive play, which in a lot of ways, has been the story of Indiana’s season.

I believe we’re destined to see that same story continue to unfold for the Pacers in Game 2. Both teams own a considerable advantage on offense over the opposing defense in this series, and based on the events that transpired in Game 1, the scales appear to be slightly tilted toward New York. It will be interesting to see how the Pacers counter to try to maximize their overall edge on the offensive side of the script. But either way, it should equate to a relatively high-scoring series. I like the over in Game 2.
