Supercomputer Predicts NCAA Champion

March Madness has not disappointed thus far and we still have the final weekend to go. Two unlikely contenders have found their way to the Final Four with 11 North Carolina State and 4 Alabama making it further than anyone expected, including Bettingexpert’s supercomputer, BETSiE. Ahead of this weekend’s matchups we put BETSiE back to work to predict how the final weekend will play out. Below you can find its predictions as well as predictions from the Sweet 16 and our methodology.

BETSiE is high on the favorites this weekend, giving both UConn and Purdue a nearly 90% chance to win their matchups. The computer has also officially joined the masses in predicting the Huskies to become the first back-to-back champions since Florida in 2007 and 2008. BETSiE gives UConn a 61% chance to win it all with Purdue in a distant second with their chances sitting just under 35%. If the Crimson Tide or Wolfpack were to claim the national championship it would be a true shocker, with BETSiE giving Alabama only a 3% chance and NC State an even smaller chance at 1%. With sports betting now legal in the Tar Heel State though, local fans who want to wager on the Wolfpack’s longshot bid should check out our North Carolina sportsbooks review to find which one is best for them.

Highlights

While Houston remains BETSiE’s favorite to win it all this year, their chances are dwindling and UConn is right on their heels. After the supercomputer’s pre-tournament predictions gave the Cougars a 31.7% chance to cut down the nets, that number has dropped to 24.5% following the first two rounds of play. The Huskies, however, have improved their odds from 19.4% to 24.1%. BETSiE heavily favors those two squads to make the championship game, which would be an exciting conclusion to this season’s March Madness.

With all of the 1 and 2 seeds from this year’s tournament still playing, BETSiE doesn’t expect many upsets this weekend. The supercomputer predicts the higher seed will win each Sweet 16 matchup. BETSiE is not high on North Carolina however. The Tar Heels have only the 7th best odds of winning the championship of all remaining teams. This makes them the lowest rated one seed, and even ranks them behind three of the four remaining 2 seeds (with Marquette being the only one ranked lower at 9). BETSiE has UNC as the only victim of an upset this weekend as well, with the computer projecting 2 seed Arizona to defeat them in the Elite 8.

Methodology

BETSiE predictions are based on 1 million simulations of the entire NCAA tournament. These simulations take into account factors such as team rankings, matchup odds, level of competition, average scoring by both teams, and win-loss probabilities.
