UFC on FOX 28 Preview

One week before we get to see the immortal Cris Cyborg defending her featherweight title against Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222, we’re getting another tantalizing card that can help build our bankroll towards next weekend. UFC on Fox 28 is main evented by two male featherweight contenders and features a tight MMA betting card that provides excellent, Saturday night viewing.

Jeremy Stephens -165 over Josh Emmett +145
Maybe it’s time that we give Jeremy Stephens his due. The 31-year old has now crested Doo Ho Choi and Gilbert Melendez with a pair of outstanding performances that have seemingly put his 2-5 SU run stretching back to 2014 well behind him. Stephens has tons of power for a featherweight and is finally learning to use it efficiently. His last two fights have been Fight of the Night bonus earners.

As the MMA betting suggest, Josh Emmett is no pushover. He is 13-1 overall and is a bright up and comer whose only loss was a split decision to Desmond Green at UFC 210. The read on Emmett is simply that he’s a grinder. There’s barely a point of difference in his arsenal. He’s won 4 fights by knockout, 2 by submission and has stretched eight of his other bouts to decision.

Unless there’s been some magical evolution in Emmett’s game, he’s untouchable in this fight. Stephens deserves some recognition for his last two outings andis hunting to crack the elite echelon in the featherweight division. Leave a haymaker artist like Stephens in the fight too long and he’ll find a way to get to your chin.

Tecia Torres +250 over Jessica Andrade -290
This is essentially a bargain hunting bet on Torres, who is still a stealthy 10-1 overall and is riding a three fight win streak since losing to Rose Namajunas two years ago. Andrade is the obvious choice for the oddsmakers given her record, which stands at a daunting 17-6. The edge in the book goes to the oddsmakers, but Torres is worth a flier here since it’s simply too costly to make money on Andrade in this one. I don’t dislike Torres either. She’s a young, capable fighter entering her physical prime.

Ovince Saint Preux -145 over Ilir Latifi +125
No idea why the price tag on OSP is so damn low. He is a borderline contender in the light heavyweight division and has been on a killing spree lately with very convincing victories over Marcos Rogerio de Lima, Yusin Okami and Corey Anderson all of which were ended early.

Latifi is an admirable fighter who is in the midst of a 4-1 streak in his last five fights, but his knockout loss to Ryan Bader was eye opening regarding his flaws. Tyson Pedro took him the distance at UFC 215. This is merely a bet against Latifi, who is not arching as high as OSP’s stock is right now. Lean heavy on this one. Saint Preux is going to destroy here.

Mike Perry -375 over Max Griffin +310
These odds are too cavernous for my liking, so if you’re going to do anything here it’s bet on Griffin at over 3-to-1. Both fighters are coming off losses, but Perry is undoubtedly the better fighter and at 26 years old he’s a talent that the UFC wants to groom. This is a tough one to bet on, but a win is a win even if you have to pay for it.
