UFC 225 on Saturday night in Chicago features two title fights, as Robert Whittaker defends his middleweight title against Yoel Romero, while Colby Covington and Rafael dos Anjos battle for the interim welterweight title. There are five fights on the main pay-per-view card and eight fights on the preliminary card with four on FS1 and four on UFC Fight Pass.
Let’s look at the card with a focus on Whittaker vs. Romero and Covington vs. dos Anjos.
Odds Subject to Change
Robert Whittaker -234 vs. Yoel Romero
These two fought almost a year ago at UFC 213 and it was Romero winning a unanimous decision to win the interim UFC middleweight title. Whittaker was later promoted to undisputed champion when Georges St-Pierre vacated the belt. Whittaker is 19-4 in his career, including 10-2 in the UFC, while Romero is 13-2, including 9-1 in the UFC. Whittaker has not fought since beating Romero, while Romero knocked out Luke Rockhold in February. Whittaker has 10 knockout wins in his career, five submission wins and six first-round finishes. Romero has 11 knockout wins and four first-round finishes.
Romero said to MMAJunkie that he made a mistake in the first fight against Whittaker. “I made a mistake, and this time, we worked on the mistake I made in the last fight,” Romero said, “On Saturday, we’ll make it better. I had a moment in the fight I could’ve finished him, and I didn’t. This time, I’ll finish him.”
Romero said that he is learning to finish opponents when given the chance. “In the beginning when I fought in the UFC, I wanted to learn in the octagon. This time, it’s not like that. It’s not like that when you fight for the title. Now when you have a moment for the kill with somebody, you do it.”
Whittaker said that he was looking for the finish against Romero the first time. “It was a very hard and tiring first fight and to have to back that up with the same fight again … it’s certainly a pain,” Whittaker said. “I was trying to finish him. I have 25 minutes [five rounds] to try to finish him again.”
The round total at BetDSI for this fight is listed at 4.5 with the over at -140. Based on what Whittaker and Romero have said, this fight should end with a finish one way or the other. I will take the rounds to go under.
Colby Covington -130 vs. Rafael dos Anjos
The co-main event has Covington a slight favorite against dos Anjos. Covington is 13-1 in his career, while dos Anjos is 28-9. There is no question that dos Anjos has made a nice recovery after losing twice in 2016. He has won each of his last three fights including a unanimous decision win against Robbie Lawler in December. He has nine wins by submission and five by knockout. Covington has four submission wins and three knockout wins.
This is an interesting matchup between two fighters that would prefer to get the fight to the ground. Covington is going to continually pressure dos Anjos in this fight and look for the takedown. Dos Anjos may be better off using his kicks to keep Covington at a distance and look to win this fight from the outside. The rounds total at BetDSI is listed at 4.5, with the over at -171. I think there is a decent chance one of the two gets the finish, so I will take the plus money and go under the rounds total of 4.5.
