Joval to face McGirt in Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) -Middleweight contender Raymond Joval is scheduled to face prospect and champion's son James ``Buddy'' McGirt Jr. in the 10-round main event July 25 in Saratoga Springs.

The eight-fight card at the 1,500-seat City Center coincides with the start of the thoroughbred racing season at Saratoga Race Course. The feature bout between Joval (37-4, 16 KOs) and McGirt (18-1, 9 KOs) will be televised by ESPN2, promoter Lisa Elovich said.

Joval, 39, from the Netherlands, has won his last four fights and has been training in the Catskills, Elovich said. He has held the International Boxing Organization middleweight title.

McGirt, 25, from Vero Beach, Fla., was stopped in his last fight April 11 by Carlos DeLeon Jr. in seven rounds. His father, trainer James ``Buddy'' McGirt, was world welterweight champion in the early 1990s.

In the local feature, Saratoga Springs heavyweight Gary Wilcox (21-3, 7 KOs) will fight unbeaten Nagy Aguilera (8-0, 6 KOs) from Newburgh in the Hudson Valley.

Lightweight Mike Faragon (3-0) from suburban Albany will face Francisco Palacios (3-4-4, 1 KO) of Stamford, Conn., and Schenectady light welterweight Brian Miller (2-0-2) is scheduled to fight Brian Abraham in his debut.

``We've got an influx now of guys from the local gyms who have just recently turned pro,'' said Elovich. ``We've got a big pool of boxers now in upstate New York.''
