March Madness Odds for AP Top 25 Teams: Rankings’ Impact on National Title Betting

March Madness odds and AP Top 25 rankings are by no means tied at the hip. In fact, there are often notable discrepancies between a team's AP poll ranking and its odds to win the NCAA Tournament.

Even at the top, there are some modest differences. At BetMGM, Houston remains No. 1 in the rankings, but No. 2 on the odds board. Defending champion and second-ranked UConn remains atop odds to win March Madness.

Kentucky (23-8 SU) moved up six spots in the AP poll this week, from No. 15 to No. 9. But interestingly, the Wildcats remained +2200 in BetMGM's March Madness futures odds, despite being one of the most-bet teams to win it all.

BetMGM trader Seamus Magee is starting to put a little more stock in John Calipari's squad.

"Kentucky is growing on me," Magee said. "Since that Gonzaga loss [Feb. 10], they've started to look pretty impressive. They're BetMGM's biggest liability on the national outright, so we're hoping they can slow down a bit here in March.

"It's nonstop action on Kentucky."

The Wildcats are 7-1 SU since falling at home to Gonzaga, winning their last five games. That includes high-quality wins at home vs. Alabama and at Tennessee on Saturday.

Speaking of bluebloods: North Carolina moved from No. 7 to No. 4 in the rankings. But like Kentucky, Carolina remained +1800 to win the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels (25-6 SU) are on a 6-0 SU run, capping the regular season with an 84-79 road win over Duke.

"North Carolina is another pretty public team that's looked great as of late," Magee said, adding that if the Tar Heels keep it up, they could land a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. "I wouldn't be shocked at all if they've played themselves onto the 1 line. A deep run would for UNC would be no surprise to me."
