Betting on the Gonzaga Bulldogs
Over the last two decades, the Gonzaga Bulldogs have consistently walloped West Coast Conference opponents, making for very unique betting lines.
Gonzaga Men’s Basketball History
From their inaugural season in 1943 through the late 1990s, Gonzaga’s basketball program was nothing to write home about.
They didn’t make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament until 1995 when, as the WCC’s automatic qualifier, they were bounced in the first round to 3rd-seeded Maryland.
Even future NBA star and Hall of Famer John Stockton couldn’t lead the ‘Zags to the NCAA Tournament or an AP Top 25 ranking in the early ‘80s.
In the 1998-99 season, Gonzaga made it all the way to the Elite 8 as a 10-seed before losing to the eventual national champion, Connecticut.
After the Bulldog’s miraculous tournament-run, Head Coach Dan Monson took the head coaching job at Minnesota which was a perceived step up in the college coaching ranks.
Ironically, since Monson’s departure, Gonzaga has vastly outperformed Minnesota, and almost everyone.
Mark Few, a longtime Gonzaga assistant, took over as Head Coach the next season and never looked back.
Since Few’s tenure began, Gonzaga has established itself as one of the most consistent and dominant forces in the sport.
Few recruited and developed future college and NBA stars like Adam Morrison, Kevin Pangos, Domantas Sabonis, and Rui Hachimura.
The Bulldogs have never missed the NCAA tournament with Few at the helm, and have ranked number one in the country at some point in each of the last four seasons, including 2021-22.
Despite Gonzaga’s 20-year run of excellence, it still has its fair share of doubters. The knock on the Bulldogs, and on Mark Few, is that they haven’t won a national title.
Many cite the relatively weak WCC as a reason for Gonzaga’s success, but they’ve also made several deep runs in the NCAA tournament.
Betting on Gonzaga in Washington
Sports betting is legal in Washington but only at tribal casinos. Online sports betting is not legal in the Evergreen State.
Legalization in retail, tribal casinos is a commonly taken path to sports betting legalization in the US. Betting on the spread of a Gonzaga basketball game may look something like this:
· Gonzaga -10.5
· St. Mary’s +10.5
Here, Gonzaga is a 10.5-point favorite over the St. Mary’s Gaels. If a bettor is backing the ‘Zags, they need the ‘Zags to win by at least 11 points.
If Gonzaga wins by less than 11, or loses straight up, Saint Mary’s would cover the spread, not Gonzaga.
