Betting on the Mississippi State Bulldogs

As long standing members of the SEC, the Mississippi State Bulldogs also have a long tradition of excellence in their football program. This tradition also makes the team a very popular betting option at legal retail sportsbooks in Mississippi casinos.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Team Overview

The football program at Mississippi State University in Starkville dates back to 1902. Playing as an Independent for nearly two decades, the Bulldogs became members of the Southern Conference in 1921.

The Southern Conference laid the groundwork for both the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). A few other former members of the Southern include Alabama, Auburn and Georgia which are part of the SEC. Clemson, Georgia Tech and North Carolina were also in the Southern Conference before joining the ACC.

Mississippi State failed to reach a postseason bowl during its tenure in the Southern Conference lasting until 1932. Joining the SEC the following season, the Bulldogs qualified for the Orange Bowl in 1936. They went on to win the Orange Bowl in 1940 with Allyn McKeen as the team’s head coach. Mississippi State ended that season as the No. 9 team in the national rankings.

Throughout the next several decades, Mississippi State managed to work its way into the nation’s Top 25 on multiple occasions. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 14 in 1957 and No. 17 in 1974.

More recently, head coach Jackie Sherrill had his team ranked nationally seven times during his first nine years at the helm from 1991 to 2000. His tenure with the team came to an end after the 2003 season. His best season as head coach was in 1999 when the Bulldogs reached No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25. They were 10-2 that year and ranked No. 13 in the final Top 25 poll.

Former head coach Dan Mullen led the Bulldogs to the No. 1 spot in the nation during the 2014 season. They finished the year as the No. 11 team in the final rankings.

Betting on the Bulldogs against bitter SEC rival Ole Miss has become a big deal in recent years. A popular wager is the OVER on the game’s total line. If that line happened to be set at 54 points, these two teams would have to score a combined 55 points or more to cash a winning bet.

Betting on the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Mississippi

Betting on sports in Mississippi was first legalized in 2018. Tied to a network of land-based casinos, this was one of the first states outside of Nevada to add legal retail sportsbooks to its gaming options.

With legal betting on in-state college athletics, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are a top draw at retail sportsbooks all across the state. Online sports betting remains restricted to mobile betting apps that can only be accessed while on casino grounds.
