SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - When the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired starter Trevor Cahill, the team felt it got exactly what it needed: a talented young pitcher who throws a lot of innings, has a devastating sinker and a long-term contract.

Cahill struggled in his spring debut with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, a 10-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Cahill gave up a two-run homer and a solo shot in the first inning. His second inning was better. He ended up giving up three hits and a walk overall and struck out two.

``I was a little wild in the first then kind of settled down,' Cahill said. ``I never have done very well in my first couple of spring training outings. It is just a matter of getting comfortable. My arm feels good so that is the biggest positive for the day.'

On Dec. 9, the Diamondbacks traded their top pitching prospect, Jared Parker, right-hander Ryan Cook and outfielder Collin Cowgill to the Oakland A's for Cahill and left-handed reliever Craig Breslow. The 24-year-old Cahill, who is slotted in the third spot of the rotation, is signed through the 2015 season, though the club has options for 2016 and 2017.

Last season was a tale of two halves for Cahill. He notched eight wins and registered a 3.12 ERA in the first half. In the second half, his ERA ballooned to 5.80. He finished the year with a 12-14 mark with a 4.16 ERA.

``I got a little wild,' Cahill said. ``If I knew what it was it would be a lot easier to fix. It was kind of a focus thing.'

Cleveland's Jack Hannahan hit a grand slam Wednesday and Jason Kipnis and Shin-Soo Choo also connected for home runs Wednesday.

Hannahan's fourth-inning shot came off Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs, who gave up one hit and four walks.

Indians left-hander David Huff, who is battling for the final spot in the rotation, allowed two runs, two hits and struck out one in three innings for the win.

``Overall, I am pleased,' Huff said. ``The first inning, I was aggressive, then I got too fine in the second inning. The third inning, I went after them again, aggressively.'

NOTES: Diamondback starter Josh Collmenter will skip his next start, which was scheduled for Friday, because of soreness in his right arm. The injury is not considered serious and Collmenter will throw a bullpen session Friday instead. Diamondbacks prospect Trevor Bauer will replace Collmenter. . Reliever Evan Marshall participated in all his drills Wednesday after being hit in the chest and right arm by a line drive in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game. .Indians All-Star closer Chris Perez participated in his first baseball activity since being sidelined with a left oblique strain. Perez, who suffered the injury Feb. 24, played catch, making 45 throws from 60 feet.
