TORONTO (AP) - No longer bothered by the sore arm that slowed him down last season, Toronto right-hander Carlos Villanueva feels ``magnificent' on the mound these days.

That's a good word to describe his latest performance, too.

Villanueva pitched six shutout innings, Yunel Escobar drove in two runs and the Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 Wednesday night.

``Carlos did an outstanding job,' Blue Jays manager John Farrell said.

Starting for the second time this season after making 22 relief appearances, Villanueva (3-0) allowed just four hits, three of them singles. He walked none and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts.

``He's a kid that really pitches,' Royals manager Ned Yost said. ``He's got an above average curveball, he's got an above average changeup that he can command, he spots his fastball really well.'

Villanueva went 6-4 in 33 games with Toronto last season, including 13 starts, but landed on the disabled list in August with soreness in his elbow and forearm and missed almost a month.

``I had three or four starts with no pain in my arm and after that my elbow was killing me,' he said. ``Last year when I was done (pitching) I just dreaded waking up the next day because I knew I was going to feel horrible. It was just a four day grind to get ready for the fifth day last year. I didn't even play catch in between sometimes and in the end it caught up to me.'

Fortunately for Villanueva and the Blue Jays, that pain is now a thing of the past.

``I felt magnificent today,' Villanueva said. ``Physically I feel good and I know what I have to do to stay on top of my body and my routine every day.'

Jason Frasor replaced Villanueva in the seventh but couldn't keep the shutout bid alive. Moustakas hit a two-out single and scored when Francoeur tripled to left on a ball that skipped past Davis and rolled all the way to the wall.

Darren Oliver pitched the eighth and Casey Janssen finished in the ninth for his 11th save in 12 opportunities.

Every Blue Jays starter had at least one hit as Toronto won for the fourth time in six games. The Blue Jays are 6-1 against Kansas City this season and have won nine of the past 12 meetings dating to 2011.

Jeff Francoeur's RBI triple in the seventh provided the only run of the game for the Royals, who have lost five of six.

Three of Toronto's four runs came on sacrifice flies, leaving Royals manager Ned Yost frustrated that starter Luis Mendoza was unable to keep his sinker down and get ground balls instead of fly balls.

``The only thing was he couldn't get the ball down in crucial situations,' Yost said. ``All three runs came on sac flies on pitches that were up.'

Toronto opened the scoring in the second when Rajai Davis tripled and scored on Kelly Johnson's sacrifice fly.

The Blue Jays added two more in the third. Edwin Encarnacion led off with a ground ball to second and was safe when Mendoza and Eric Hosmer got tangled up at first, with Mendoza catching the throw by failing to step on the base.

``I was kind of late getting over to the bag,' Hosmer said. ``Me and Mendy kind of called it at the same time. I think I just broke too late and probably should have let Mendy take care of that right there.'

Adam Lind followed with a double, sending Encarnacion to third, before Escobar and Davis hit back-to-back sacrifice flies.

Escobar added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out RBI single off Kelvin Herrera.

``I thought we did an excellent job of manufacturing some runs,' Farrell said.

Coming off a win over Minnesota in his last start, Mendoza pitched well but was unable to earn consecutive victories for the first time this season. Mendoza (3-5) allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out a career-high nine.
