DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) - Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli knew something was wrong with Freddy Garcia almost immediately after the pitcher was hit in the hand by a comebacker and walked right off the mound.

``If he walks away, forget it, because my guy, he likes to throw no matter what happens,' said catcher Francisco Cervelli after the Yankees' 7-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Garcia was hit at the base of his thumb and index finger on his pitching hand in the fourth inning on a one-hop shot off the bat of Edwin Encarnacion. After being hit Garcia spun around for an instant, looking for the ball, then he headed toward the Yankees' dugout.

Garcia's hand quickly swelled and he was driven back to New York's spring training complex in Tampa, where he saw Dr. Allen Miller, the Yankees' Tampa-based orthopedic surgeon. X-rays were negative.

The was no additional information but manager Joe Girardi didn't express too much concern.

``His hand swelled up a lot right away,' Girardi said. ``I don't know what that means. ... I don't think he was necessarily trying to catch it with his hand. I think it just caught him. You don't want to see any of that but it happens.'

Girardi was happy with what he saw from one of the pitchers competing for a spot in the rotation.

``I thought he threw the ball pretty well. He commands all his off-speeds, he commands his fastball, he changes speeds and that's exactly what he did today. His split was effective,' Girardi said. ``He just got his hand in the way. That's the one thing I didn't like.'

Encarnacion also hit two homers for Toronto, one against Garcia. After reaching base in the fourth he scored on J.P. Arencibia's home run off Yankees reliever Cory Wade.

New York tied it in the third on Derek Jeter's two-out single and Curtis Granderson's double to right-center field but Arencibia's homer made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Encarnacion added a three-run shot to center field off Manny Banuelos in Toronto's four-run fifth. The Yankees made it close with four runs in the sixth.

``When (Edwin) stays through the baseball his power is as good as anybody we have and it was obviously the case today,' Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. ``He didn't try to overswing the bat or muscle up against good velocity. He trusted his hands and that's what he's capable of.

``We all saw the second half (of the 2011 season) - and really the last couple of years of what he's capable of in the second half - and when he maintains that swing he's a very dangerous hitter,' Farrell added.

NOTES: New York right fielder Nick Swisher left the game in the fifth inning with what Girardi said was ``a little tightness in his left groin. We'll have to see how he is but there are no tests planned.' ... Yankees setup man Dave Robertson, who injured his right foot last week when he stumbled and fell down some stairs, ran on a treadmill for half an hour. ``I don't have the speed,' Robertson said, smiling, ``but there was no pain.' ... The Blue Jays are riding an eight-game unbeaten streak, including a tie with Boston. ... Toronto optioned shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, outfielder Moises Sierrra and pitcher Trystan Magnuson to its minor league camp. ... On Thursday the Yankees will start Michael Pineda against the Nationals at Viera and the Blue Jays, looking for a three-game spring training sweep of Houston, will start Dustin McGowan against Zach Duke and the Astros at Kissimmee.
