NBA Best Bets | Expert Picks for Monday, March 11

Suns vs Cavaliers

by Michael Crosson

In the grand scheme of things, the Cavaliers are having an excellent campaign – currently positioned 3rd in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 41-23, while ranking 16th in offensive rating and 3rd in defensive rating.

At this point, however, it seems like their middle-of-the-pack offense is finally beginning to catch up with them. The Cavaliers have posted a lackluster record of 6-7 in their last 13 games, while ranking 20th in offensive rating during that span – resulting in Cleveland scoring 110 points or less in eight of those contests.

While on the flip side, the Suns also find themselves in a little bit of a rough patch due to the recent four-game absence of Devin Booker.

With that in mind, however, Phoenix’s latest struggles didn’t exactly begin with Booker’s latest injury, highlighted by the Suns owning a record of 4-5 in their last nine games, while ranking 17th in offensive rating during that stretch – and scoring 110 points or less in five of those nine contests.

On the bright side, at least both teams can still play defense. Defensively, the Cavaliers have held their opponent to 110 points or less in 13 of their last 19 games, naturally bogging down their pace of play – highlighted by Cleveland ranking 27th in pace since January 28.

While on the other side of that same coin, the Suns have hit a roadblock offensively in their last 10 games, but they’ve managed to keep themselves afloat by playing to the 9th-best defensive rating across that window.

Even with Booker possibly returning tonight, I still believe the total for this contest is too high for a pair of teams that rank in the bottom-half of pace on the season – and continue to trend downward on offense. Give me the under.

Pick: Under 220.5 (-110)

Warriors vs Spurs

by Stephen Nover

Golden State Warriors -4 (-105)

No Stephen Curry for the Warriors here while the Spurs are expected to get back rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama, their top scorer, and Devin Vassell, their second-leading scorer.

I know that going in. But it doesn't matter. I like the Warriors to soundly beat the Spurs in this rapid revenge spot.

The Spurs stunned the totally flat Warriors, 126-113, at San Francisco this past Saturday as 12 1/2-point underdogs. Curry didn't play and he remains out with an ankle injury. The Warriors have the rest of their stars back in action, though, including Klay Thompson and Chris Paul.

Golden State is holding onto the 10th playoff spot in the West, giving it a place in the play-in tournament. The Warriors, however, can't afford to take the 14-50 Spurs lightly. Golden State's next two games are on the road against the Mavericks and resurgent Lakers, who are off home victories against the Timberwolves and Bucks.

The Warriors are 8-1 SU and ATS during their past nine road games with the only defeat in this span coming to the Celtics. They've defeated the Spurs four straight times in San Antonio. The Spurs haven't been home in eight days. So their concentration level could be off and their motivation down after having just upset the Warriors.
