Another Patriot Pinched
Edelman Facing Four-Game Suspension

Julian Edelman is the latest and greatest Patriot to get caught for cheating. Cue the haters talking about how this franchise is poisoning the well. If you don’t mind, I’m going to ignore all that chatter and just assure those of you that launched early money on this team in the NFL futures that everything is going to be ok.

The New England Patriots are still favored to win Super Bowl LII at +625, ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings. They’re also the clear cut favorite in the AFC, and in the AFC North which they’ve ruled with an iron fist for this entire century. None of those odds are in jeopardy.

Bettors that took the New England Patriots to win OVER 10.5 games in the early projections for season win totals shouldn’t worry too much either. Even if he wins an appeal, Edelman being out for games against Houston, Jacksonville, Detroit (away) and Miami is still tough sledding with or without him. The remainder of the slate is filled with wins outside of the Vikings in Week 13 and Pittsburgh in Week 15.

Some might say that the Patriots did just fine without Edelman last season, but that’s when they had a remarkably healthy Dion Lewis in the backfield and Danny Amendola. The team now defers to Chris Hogan and Rob Gronkowski as their top options, with Sony Michel probably receiving a significant workload in his first game as a rookie.

Again, nothing to worry about with Tom Brady at the helm, but the Patriots are now really tough to bet on in the opening few weeks of the season. Houston is a potential Super Bowl contender (if they can stay healthy, which has been a huge problem for them overall in the last half-decade), and Jacksonville proved decisively that they can compete with the Patriots in the playoffs last year.

Miami is pretty much spoken for since they got significantly worse in the off-season and also have to deal with Ryan Tannehill as their quarterback again, but the Detroit Lions pose an intriguing threat given Matt Patricia’s insider information.

What this shakes down to is an incredibly intriguing opening month for the New England Patriots. There’s no reason to panic if you’re the Patriots, and trust me, their fans are as confident as ever. This situation still has to play out, and truthfully the only people this seriously impacts is those that play fantasy football and wanted Edelman in the first round.

Truthfully, while Edelman will miss the $470K that he would’ve been due for those four games, it’s probably a good thing that he gets extra time to recover from his torn ACL. That’s the silver lining to this whole thing.

And if the Patriots need immediate help, they can always sign Dez Bryant.
