L.A Kings vs. Edmonton Oilers
Sportsbook.ag Odds: LA (+110), Edmonton (-130); Total set at 5
The Los Angeles Kings have just 11 games left to push themselves into the playoffs and right now they sit six points back of Nashville for the 8th and final spot.
Last night's 5-2 loss in Calgary didn't do anything to help their cause and with three losses in their last four games overall, the Kings are almost on life support at this time.
Not only was last night's loss for the Kings bad in the standings, but All-Star D-man Drew Doughty suffered a head injury and his status for tonight remains unclear.
Edmonton doesn't have as many concerns as the Kings do, as they should find themselves in the playoffs for the first time in years this year and do enter tonight's game having won three in a row.
It's the end of a season-long eight-game homestand for the Oilers tonight and while things may be good overall for the club, they've slipped into a wildcard spot in the West thanks to Calgary's crazy run supplanting them.
Edmonton may not be a team loaded with playoff experience, but they definitely do not want their first foray into spring hockey to come against a division winner and would love to grab two points ahead of a back-to-back on the road on Wednesday and Thursday.
So which team has the edge tonight?
Well, Doughty's status is definitely a concern for the Kings but sometimes desperation sparks a team into playing their best hockey and there aren't many teams more desperate and with a more realistic shot at a late season push then L.A.
I've mentioned before that road teams playing the dreaded Alberta swing on consecutive nights (Calgary/Edmonton) very rarely sweep the two-game set, but getting a split is a common occurrence.
So there is a bit of a silver lining from last night's loss for the Kings in that regard, and although the home side has won four straight in this Pacific Division battle, the Kings are 2-1 SU in their last three trips to Edmonton overall.
L.A is also 6-1 SU when coming off a loss of 3+ goals and although the Oilers are a much better team this year than in year's past, the Kings are still 21-6 SU against the Oilers in the last 27 meetings.
Add in the plus-money price tag on the visitors and there are plenty of strong reasons to back the boys from Hollywood tonight.
The reasons don't stop there though as teams have a tendency to get complacent and sloppy at the end of such a long homestand like the spot the Oilers are in tonight.
Yes, Edmonton has won three in a row, all in pretty convincing fashion, but a date with Anaheim looms on deck and if the Oilers are able to pass Calgary again in the standings, chances are they'd meet up with the Ducks in the 1st round.
As desperate as the Kings are right now, they still really aren't on Edmonton's radar in terms of the standings and with Edmonton prone to struggles against big, physical teams like L.A, this is probably the night bettors should expect that three-game winning streak Edmonton has going to be halted in its tracks.
