With conference play finally here, the AP Top 10 will change often and regularly. Coaches and players get very familiar with their opponents and arenas from years past. And…they play twice a season.
Let’s look at this week’s Top 10 Stockwatch and see how they will match-up against their conference rivals, against the spread.
1) Arizona (15-0 SU, 10-4 ATS) - BUY
The Wildcats took care of the two Northwest schools in the Pac-12 last week by beating Washington State and Washington. If Arizona had its way, it would play the Cougars every Saturday. WSU scored SEVEN points in the first half, but to their credit they came back strong with 18 points in the second half. So…no surprise here, the 'Cats have the overall 3rd best defense in the league. No reason to jump off this ship now with UCLA and USC next on the schedule. UCLA might give them fits early, but I see them covering the number late. Buy Sean Miller and company.
2) Syracuse (14-0 SU, 6-4 ATS) – BUY
The Orange started their conference schedule last Saturday at home against Miami, Fl. and were very fortunate to escape with a 49-44 victory. This week the school meets Virginia Tech on Tuesday, with North Carolina and Boston College to follow. With their signature 2-3 zone defense, it’s no surprise; Syracuse is one of the elite teams in defending the hoop. VT and Boston College have not played against the zone in over two years and they get the Tar Heels at home. I’m buying the 'Cuse this week.
3) Ohio State (15-0 SU, 8-6 ATS) - SELL
The Buckeyes have a big battle with Michigan State early this week. If they are able to survive and come out victorious, I don’t see them emotionally prepared to cover a spread at Iowa a few days later. Hold for their matchup. If the Spartans win, I would sell their stock of not covering the spread vs. the Hawkeyes.
4) Wisconsin (15-0 SU, 10-4 ATS) - BUY
Wisconsin is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games. Bo Ryan has his team playing very well. With an ATS record such as this one, I’m sure as hell not going to lay money against him.
5) Michigan State (13-1 SU, 7-4-2 ATS) - HOLD
The good news for the Spartans, they get back-to-back home games. The bad news, they play two worthy opponents, Ohio State and Minnesota. Never the less, Tom Izzo is one of the best coaches in the country and he gets his team in the right frame of mind each and every game…to win, but not necessarily cover. I would watch this week and hold on Michigan State.
6) Wichita State (15-0 SU, 9-2-1 ATS) - BUY
In my last Stockreport I said hold on the Shockers…I should have known better. They have experience and talent, and are killing opponents by covering the spread over 85% of the time. Their playing level cannot be overlooked…
7) Baylor (12-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) - SELL
Baylor plays its first ture road game of the season at Iowa State. Even as healthy underdogs, it still won’t be enough…Good Luck! Maybe next year schedule a few road games before January.
8) Villanova (13-1 SU, 9-3 ATS) - BUY
Villanova suffered its first loss to Syracuse last week, but it bounced back and beat Butler on the road in overtime. After beating the Bulldogs, Villanova showed its strength with an easy 30-point win (90-60) over Providence on Sunday. I think now is a good time to start buying a little of what the Wildcats are producing. With Seton Hall and St. John's next on the schedule, I think they handle their business due to the Syracuse experience.
9) Iowa State (13-0 SU, 8-3 ATS) - BUY
As long as the Cyclones are playing at home there should be no problem with them dominating teams. Buy Iowa State against Baylor early this week, but hold off when they hit the road. They still need to show they can handle a rambunctious crowd.
10) Florida (11-2 SU, 4-4-1 ATS) - HOLD
Look who made the Top 10…not sure why. They have played three road games thus far and have lost two of them, with their only win against Jacksonville…who? They need to prove their worth. I will hold for now.
