Betting on the Kentucky Wildcats

Because of Kentucky’s long history of success, it has often played the role of the villain in college basketball. Whether the Wildcats garner more love or hate is tough to say.

Regardless, people love to bet on teams in the spotlight, and Kentucky is almost always in it.

Kentucky Wildcats Men’s Basketball History

Kentucky’s most dominant run came a long time ago. Coach Adolph Rupp led the program to four national championships between 1948 and 1958.

Rupp’s tenure lasted through 1972, but he and the Wildcats would not win another title despite being highly-ranked most of the time.

In 1978, Kentucky brought home its first championship in the post-Rupp era. Joe B. Hall coached the team to a 30-2 record in just his sixth season.

In the ‘90s, the Wildcats were crowned twice in three years under two different coaches.

First, Rick Pitino led the team to a championship, and a 34-2 record, in the 1995-96 season. Pitino’s team returned to the championship game the next year where they lost to Arizona in overtime.

The following season, Pitino left for the NBA. The team then hired Tubby Smith, and Kentucky won another national title.

Unfortunately, and reasonably, for Smith, it was downhill from there. He was fired in 2007 after spending 10 seasons in Lexington.

In 2009, Kentucky hired Memphis’ John Calipari, and he helped Kentucky regain a grip on its college basketball notoriety.

Calipari specialized in bringing in elite high school talent like Anthony Davis, John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, and many more.

In 2012, Davis led the Wildcats to their eighth championship.

In 2015, Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker led Kentucky to a 38-0 record before falling in the Final Four to a veteran-laden Wisconsin team.

Betting on the Wildcats in Kentucky

Despite playing host to the Kentucky Derby, one of the most popular betting events in the country, the Kentucky legislature has not yet legalized sports betting.

In January of 2022, Kentucky Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayer proclaimed his support for legal sports betting in the Bluegrass State.

His support will likely go a long way, with many believing 2022 is the year for Kentucky legalized sports betting.

Thayer even stated that without legalization, Kentucky risks becoming “an island” surrounded by states with legal sports betting options.

If legal sports betting comes to fruition in Kentucky, betting on the Wildcats against their in-state rival, Louisville, might look something like this

·        Kentucky -10.5

·        Louisville +10.5

In this situation, the Wildcats are big, 10.5-point favorites over the Cardinals. If you wanted to back Kentucky on the spread, you’d need at least an 11-point victory.

If Kentucky won this game by fewer than 11, or lost, your wager would settle as a loss.
