Betting on the Memphis Tigers

Playing as a Mid-Major program, the Memphis Tigers have a long history of excellence as a basketball team. In turn, this has made the Tigers a popular betting team over the years. This is also one of the most storied programs through its record of success in the annual NCAA Tournament.

Like so many older college basketball programs in the country, Memphis got its start as an Independent in the mid-1950’s.

Two decades later, the Tigers first made their mark on the national stage. In 1973, they advanced to the NCAA Tournament Championship only to lose to a national power. The UCLA Bruins had just won the previous six national titles.

Memphis moved onto various conferences in the late 1970’s starting with the Metro. One more stop in the Great Midwest for four seasons paved the way for joining Conference USA in 1995.

Throughout the mid-1980’s through the mid-1990’s, Memphis qualified for the NCAA Tournament field in eight of 12 seasons. The highlight was a trip to the Final Four in 1985.

Starting in the early 2000’s, the Tigers regained their prominence as a perennial tournament team. In 2008, Memphis faced the Big 12’s Kansas Jayhawks in the championship game of that season’s NCAA Tournament. Once again, the Tigers came up short against a national power in a 75-68 loss.

In 2013, the American Athletic Conference was formed with Memphis as a charter program. Still considered a Mid Major, the AAC was made up of teams predominantly from C-USA along the remnants of the old Big East.

Natural rivalries against the Houston Cougars and SMU Mustangs carried over. However, a new rivalry has been formed with Wichita State after the Shockers joined the AAC in 2017.

Memphis has always played a very competitive nonconference schedule in basketball. The Tigers routinely go up against major programs from the SEC and other power conferences.

The highly competitive nature of this program is part of the Tigers’ appeal to college basketball fans and bettors. Come March, if the Tigers happen to be in the NCAA Tournament field, they automatically become a popular pick to stage a few upsets.

If you are betting on the Tigers in a legal state, you're in luck and there are plenty of options when placing your bets. A common strategy when betting on basketball is wagering on the spread. A spread looks similar to this:

  • Memphis   -4.5
  • Houston +4.5

A bettor wagering on the Tigers -4.5 needs them to win the game by 5 points or more to win their bet. On the other side, a bettor who wagered on the Cougars +4.5 can have the team lose by 4 points or less, and even win the game to collect their winnings.

Betting on the Memphis Tigers in Tennessee

Fortunately for Memphis Tigers’ fans, you can legally bet on their basketball games in Tennessee. The Volunteer State legalized online sports betting in 2020 and went live in November of that year.

Since there are no land-based casinos in Tennessee, the only legal form of sports betting is online through mobile sportsbook betting apps.
