Betting on the Purdue Boilermakers

Although the Indiana Hoosiers claim the state nickname, the Purdue Boilermakers have given Hoosier state residents plenty to cheer about throughout their history.

In a state where people are romantic about basketball, Purdue has become a hot ticket at Mackey Arena and at the betting window.

Purdue Men’s Basketball History

Purdue has frequented the NCAA Tournament for the last four decades, but it has just two trips to the Final Four and zero national championships overall.

Impressively, Purdue’s basketball program has only had two head coaches since 1980. Coach Gene Keady led the Boilermakers from 1980-2005 before Matt Painter took over the season after Keady retired.

Painter actually played for Keady in the early ‘90s and was an assistant for one season under the legendary coach before succeeding him.

Since taking over, Painter has had a similar run to his predecessor. Always good, never quite good enough.

His most successful team won the Big Ten in 2019, snagged a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament, and eventually lost by five in overtime in the Elite 8 to Virginia, the eventual national champion.

Boilermakers’ point guard Carsen Edwards was phenomenal that season as he cemented himself among the Purdue greats.

With him on that list would be a number of other players from the Matt Painter era. There’s Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun Moore and possibly current players Trevion Williams and Jaden Ivey.

Betting on Purdue in Indiana

Online and retail sports betting are both legal in the Hoosier State. In 2019, the first retail and online sportsbooks launched, setting the stage for what has been a popular betting market.

There are over 10 retail sports betting locations in Indiana and almost as many online operators. The first books to go live in Indiana were BetRivers and DraftKings.

Since then, they’ve been joined by a few competitors, most notably FanDuel and BetMGM.

On Purdue’s campus, however, the university strictly prohibits wagering on any Purdue sporting events. That means even non-athlete students can’t place bets on their school’s team.

If they do, they run the risk of being expelled.

Betting on basketball is appealing to the passionate Hoosier State residents, even if it means betting on Indiana University’s rival, Purdue.

·        Purdue -5.5

·        Indiana +5.5

In the example above, the Boilermakers are favored by 5.5 points over the Hoosiers. A bettor laying the points with Purdue would need a victory of at least 6 points.

If Purdue won the contest by fewer than 6, or if they lost, Purdue bettors would lose, and Indiana would cover the spread.
