Betting on the Iowa State Cyclones

Perhaps as much as fans, bettors have loved seeing Iowa State thrive in the last several seasons and add another element to the already-competitive Big 12.

Iowa State Cyclones History

Iowa State’s first college football season came all the way back in 1895, but longevity doesn’t always lead to success. The Cyclones have been ranked in the AP Poll for a total of just 70 weeks entering the 2022-23 season.

The good news is that a good portion of those weeks have come in the last half decade. Prior to that, the glory days defaulted to the mid-‘70s through the early-‘80s for Iowa State football fans.

Despite the program’s relative success in the ‘70s, it went 0-4 in bowl games. It wasn’t until the team defeated the University of Pittsburgh in the 2000 Insight Bowl that it claimed its first bowl victory. Since getting over that hump, the Cyclones have added a few more bowl victories.

Recently, Iowa State has produced a handful of notable NFL players, including wide receiver Allen Lazard and running back David Montgomery. Head Coach Matt Campbell has had the Cyclones on the rise for the last few years and will look to build on the winning culture he’s brought to Ames.

Betting on the Cyclones in Iowa

Both retail and online sports betting are legal in Iowa as of May 2019. Just a few months later in August, the first sportsbooks went live.

There are currently more than a dozen online sportsbooks available in the Hawkeye State, including FanDuel, PointsBet, and BetRivers. The state has no major professional sports teams, so college sports garner a lot of interest from fans and bettors.

Iowa has been able to welcome so many operators with ease due in large part to its 6.75% tax rate. It’s one of the lowest in the country and is nothing compared to some of the nation’s leaders like New York, which has a rate of 51%.

Bettors looking to place a wager on the Cyclones can expect to see something like this on one of the many available sportsbook apps in the state:

-          Iowa State Cyclones +3.5

-          Iowa Hawkeyes -3.5

In this hypothetical in-state battle, the Cyclones find themselves as 3.5-point underdogs against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa State backers are rooting for the Cyclones to win outright or lose by 3 or fewer points.

If Iowa defeats Iowa State by 4 or more, it covers the spread, and Iowa State bettors lose their wagers.
