Betting on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish

If there were such a thing as a national college football team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish would probably qualify. The team’s overwhelming popularity runs from coast to coast and everywhere in between. Legal betting on Notre Dame football games is quickly turning into a national pastime.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Overview

Notre Dame has always paved its own way when it comes to the university's football program. Ever since the team went 6-3-1 in 1899, the Fighting Irish have played as Independents. Without any allegiance to a specific conference, Notre Dame has always been able to set its own schedule of games.

The decision to play as an Independent all those years is directly related to the team’s unparalleled history of success on the field of play.

Notre Dame won its first college football national title in 1919. Throughout the decades, one famous head coach after another would lead the Irish to top of the list. All told, Notre Dame has been named national champion a total of 13 times.

The Fighting Irish have played in 40 major bowl games and they have been ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 in 57 seasons going back to the mid-1930’s.

The list of former head coaches includes Knute Rockne from 1918 to 1930. Ara Parseghian took over that role in 1964 and he remained at the helm through the 1974 season. Lou Holtz also made an 11-year run as head coach from 1986 through 1996.

In recent years. Head coach Brian Kelly is in his second decade with the team. He led the Fighting Irish to the BCS College Football Championship Game in 2012.

Given Notre Dame’s diverse schedule of games, rivalries have formed over the years against West Coast programs such as USC and Stanford. Given the school’s Midwest roots, the Big Ten’s Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans can also be added to the list.

As a fan favorite, betting on the Fighting Irish as home favorites has become very popular. If the team happened to be favored by six points against Michigan State in South Bend, Notre Dame would have to beat the Spartans at home by seven points or more to win that bet.

Indiana has grown into one of the strongest Midwest markets for legal sports betting in the country. This is despite the fact that it has a much smaller population than many other states in this category. Betting on Notre Dame during the college football season has remained a driving force behind that success.
