ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Qaraaba rallied from last to win the $150,000 Robert J. Frankel Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Qaraaba ran 1 1/8 miles on the rain-soaked turf course in 1:49.20 and paid $7.20, $4 and $2.80.

The 5-year-old mare was last going to the far turn and Leparoux took Qaraaba four-wide entering the stretch. From there, she went on to earn her first graded stakes victory in the race named for the late Hall of Fame trainer, who specialized in turf runners.

``She's a very handy filly and she relaxed perfectly,'' Leparoux said. ``As you could see, she won pretty easily and she had a lot left.''

Qaraaba won her U.S. debut last month at Betfair Hollywood Park after arriving from England, where she won five minor stakes.

The victory, worth $90,000, increased Qaraaba's career earnings to $171,119, with seven wins in 15 starts.

Tiz Flirtatious returned $3 and $2.20 as the 7-5 favorite, while More Chocolate was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $2.60 to show.

Shortly after Frankel's death in November 2009, the San Gorgonio Handicap, won a record eight times by the trainer, was renamed in his honor. His longtime assistant, Humberto Ascanio, presented the trophy in his first visit to Santa Anita since having a stroke a year ago.
