Tale of Ekati wins Jerome Handicap
October 5, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) -Tale of Ekati, back at his favorite track, beat You and I Forever by one length Sunday in the $159,500 Jerome Handicap for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park.
With Cornelio Velasquez aboard, Tale of Ekati covered one mile on the sloppy track in 1:36.17, paying $14.40, $7.10 and $4.30. You and I Forever returned $9 and $4.30. Harlem Rocker earned $4 to show.
Velasquez had Tale of Ekati perfectly positioned behind Z Humor and pacesetter Da' Tara, the Belmont Stakes winner. The colt joined the battle on the final turn, gradually working his way to the front to get his fourth win in 11 starts and third in four races at Belmont.
``I was pleased he handled the mud so well,'' trainer Barclay Tagg said. ``I knew he was dead-right for the race, and I thought it was a good spot for him, although it was very, very tough. The jockey rode him just the way I asked him. It was just ideal.''
Tale of Ekati's only loss at Belmont was a sixth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes. The colt earned $95,700 for Charles Fipke, who named him for a Canadian diamond mine.
Z Humor was fourth followed by the Nick Zito-trained duo of Cool Coal Man and Da' Tara. Visionaire, the 3-2 favorite, was the trailer.
Tale of Ekati's season started full of promise with a win at the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in April. That propelled him to the Kentucky Derby, but he finished fourth, 11 lengths behind Big Brown.
The Derby defeat was the start of a four-race losing streak.
