NEW YORK (AP) -Dry Martini rallied from last Saturday, beating Asiatic Boy by two lengths in the $400,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.
The Suburban topped a trio of stakes on the Independence Day card. Cat Moves won the $300,000 Prioress while Kensei captured the $200,000 Dwyer.
Dry Martini, a 6-year-old gelding, became a millionaire with his ninth career win, worth $240,000. It boosted his earnings to $1,152,406 for owner Carol Nyren.
Edgar Prado, who earlier won the Dwyer, let Dry Martini settle at the back of the pack while long shot Finallymadeit set the pace. Dry Martini split horses turning for home and surged to the wire for his second win in five starts this year.
``Once he found his room, he found another gear,'' Prado said.
The time was 2:00.80 for the 1 1/4 miles on the fast track.
Trained by Barclay Tagg, Dry Martini paid $23.60 to win.
Asiatic Boy finished a neck ahead of Rising Moon with Finallymadeit holding on for fourth. They were followed by Ready's Echo, Stud Muffin, It's a Bird, Cool Coal Man, Real Merchant, and Samhoon.
Undefeated Cat Moves improved to 3-for-3, beating entrymate Light Green by three quarters of a length in the Prioress for 3-year-old fillies.
Trained by Tony Dutrow and ridden by Ramon Dominguez, Cat Moves covered the six furlongs in 1:08.64.
Turning for home, it appeared Light Green would earn top honors before Cat Moves kicked in with a relentless rally. The entrymates were 2 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Reforestation.
Favored at even money, the entry paid $4.20 to win.
Kensei pulled off an upset in the Dwyer for 3-year-olds after Warrior's Reward, the 4-5 favorite, stumbled at the start and settled for third.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Kensei improved to 3-for-6. He ran the 1 1-16 miles in 1:40.47, paying $15.40 to win. Kensei beat Convocation by 3 1/4 lengths for his first stakes victory.
Kensei is owned by Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables and the Gulf Coast Farms. Jackson is also majority owner of the sensational filly Rachel Alexandra, the winner of the Kentucky Oaks and Preakness.
``First Curlin spoiled me; now Rachel Alexandra and Kensei are really spoiling me,'' Jackson said.
