Longtime turf writer Bortstein dies at 67
February 1, 2010
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) -Larry Bortstein, a veteran sports writer who specialized in horse racing during a career that lasted more than 40 years, has died. He was 67.
Bortstein died Sunday at Arcadia Methodist Hospital after suffering a pulmonary embolism Jan. 23, his family said in a release issued by Santa Anita Park.
A New Yorker who moved to California to continue his career as a turf writer, Bortstein covered racing for the Orange County Register for 17 years. He also was a contributor to the California Thoroughbred magazine.
``He was a consummate pro,'' Santa Anita publicity staffer Jack Disney said. ``Larry was very passionate about racing and the people in it. He was always for the underdog and he had a broad network of sources.''
Bortstein is survived by his wife, Pat, a son, Steven, daughter Christy and grandson, Jeff. Memorial services were pending, according to Pat Bortstein.
