UFC 64
Rich Franklin -210
Anderson Silva
Talking to the other fighters today, most thought Franklin is too well-rounded to lose to Silva. That said, Silva is still relatively unknown having fought just once in the UFC. He’s got solid wins over Jorge Rivera, Chris Leben, Carlos Newton and Jeremy Horn. I think Franklin is the bigger, stronger fighter but he is susceptible to the left hand. He’s been knocked out once and rocked a few times over the last three years. Silva can definitely take out Franklin if he catches him. I don’t think that will happen. Franklin wins. The interesting play is the total. Franklin did go the distance in his last fight but before that he’d never gone to a decision in 20 fights.
Sean Sherk -290
Kenny Florian
This one looks like a mismatch on paper. Florian is relatively inexperienced and Sherk has been in there with the best. He’s 30-2 with his only losses coming to Matt Hughes and George St Pierre. He did look a little lackluster in his last fight a win over Nick Diaz. Sherk is an excellent wrestler. I always favor the high-level wrestler. I liken their ability to Princeton in hoops. A wrestler can always dictate pace by taking the fight to the ground. Florian is a solid submission fighter but I just don’t see him being to dictate the pace and finish from the bottom. The only issue here is size. Sherk is viewed as a muscular freak. But now down at 155 he'll look relatively small against the much taller and naturally bigger Florian. The bettors have jumped this line 70 cents. I think they're right and this isn’t a bad bet even at -290.
Cheick Kongo -525
Carmelo Marrero
This is Kongo’s 3rd fight in UFC. He’s a long, athletic fighter who is good on his feet. He’s especially dangerous with his knees. But that’s about all we’ve seen from him. He comes from a Muay Thai background. Most Muay Thai fighters have been overmatched in UFC. We have little idea if he can roll on the mat. Marrero is taking the fight on short notice. He’s got a wrestling background at Rider but he has just five MMA fights. The matchup scares me a little. I would not lay this kind of price on Kongo.
Spencer Fisher -450
Dan Lauzon
Interesting fight here with Fisher going against an 18-year old. I can’t ever remember someone that young fighting in the UFC. One caveat, Lauzon’s brother just scored a shocking KO of 155 title favorite Jens Pulver (-625 for that fight) last month in Anaheim. That said, Fisher is a tough cookie. He's never been KO'd or submitted. He won’t overlook Lauzon and he also can’t afford another loss in UFC. Take Fisher, feel pretty safe about it.
Keith Jardine -500
Mike Nickels
These are both graduates of the UFC Reality show. Jardine has much more experience. This is too big a price though. Jardine has a tendency to fight sluggish at times. He’s very athletic and strong at 205. His kicks are great but he's not active enough in the ring. He has a chance to destroy Nickels but I’m afraid he lets Nickels stay around too long. And that always gives us a chance of a flash KO. No play.
Yushin Okami -125
Kalib Starnes
This is a tough one. Excellent matchup. Okami made his UFC debut in August with a win. Starnes is well-rounded. I like his prospects in the 185 division. He’s very big for the division at 6-3. He’s a good striker and very savvy with his submissions. Okami’s resume is impressive. Tough call, slight lean to Starnes based on value.
Two others fighters to keep an eye on. Jon Fitch and Kurt Pellegrino. Fitch is a beast. He walks around at 195 and trims to 170 for the fight. Excellent wrestler, underrated hands. Pellegrino fought on the UFC 61 card. He dominated a solid fighter Drew Fickett into the 3rd but caught by a guillotine choke. He'll view this as his last chance in UFC. No mistake this time.
Enjoy the fights on PPV or come out to World Kia to win those tix!!
