LOS ANGELES (AP) - Time is running out on the San Francisco Giants' playoff hopes, and they didn't help themselves by failing to win on a night when first-place Arizona was idle.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won 8-2 to clinch the series Thursday night, pushing the Giants to the brink of elimination in the NL West race.

The Giants open a three-game series at first-place Arizona on Friday and a victory by the Diamondbacks would eliminate the defending World Series champions.

``We dug this hole, so we knew what was ahead of us. Now we definitely can't lose a game,' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ``There are some other teams like us too that are saying the same thing. But you still should enjoy it because you're playing meaningful games now and these guys are into it.'

Against Arizona, the Giants will start left-hander Eric Surkamp on Friday, followed by right-hander Matt Cain on Saturday and right-hander Tim Lincecum in the series finale Sunday. They end the regular season hosting Colorado in a three-game series.

``We're still in there, I guess, but we've got to win from here on out and hope the other teams don't,' Giants starter Madison Bumgarner said.

``Everything went wrong this year pretty much. We've done a great job to be where we are right now with all the adversity we've had to go through this year. That says a lot about our team and the guys we have in this clubhouse.'

The Giants had no answer for NL MVP candidate Matt Kemp, who went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and a career-high three doubles, or Juan Rivera, who homered and drove in three runs as the Dodgers took two of three from their rivals.

Bumgarner (12-13) gave up four runs and nine hits in four innings, struck out one and walked none to snap his five-game winning streak. It was the left-hander's shortest outing since he also pitched four innings in a 7-2 loss at Cincinnati on July 30.

``The ball was up a lot and I had a hard time getting it down. It seemed like all the strikes were up in the zone,' he said. ``They did a god job of taking the slider away. They fouled it off a lot and fouled off some good pitches, and waited until they got one to hit. And when they did, they hit it. I didn't make good pitches like I should have.'

Kemp's two-run homer in the eighth inning off Barry Zito was his 36th, second-best in the NL. He scored three times to extend his NL lead to 109 runs and and 118 RBIs.

``The difference in him this year is his confidence and he's not chasing as much,' Bochy said. ``He's just in the zone. When great athletes get in the zone, they can do great things.'

The Giants' runs came on Carlos Beltran's two-out homer in the first and Pablo Sandoval's 23rd homer in the seventh.

The teams split their season series with nine wins apiece and each team going 5-4 at home.

Hiroki Kuroda (13-16) allowed two runs and five hits in seven-plus innings to extend his career high in wins. The right-hander struck out four and walked none.

NOTES: The announced crowd of 37,560 gave the Dodgers a season home attendance total of 2,935,139, the first time they failed to draw at least 3 million in a non-strike year since 1992. They averaged 36,236 and had just three sellouts at the 56,000-seat stadium. ... Bumgarner is 2 1-3 innings short of reaching 200 innings for the first time in his career. ... The teams ended their season series with nine wins apiece. ... The Giants have given up 95 homers this season, fewest in the majors. ... The Dodgers went 42-39 at home, their sixth straight season with a winning home record.
