NEW YORK (AP) - The Cleveland Indians had lost five straight road games before departing on a brutal trip through New York, Detroit and Texas. Now they're going to have to overcome those struggles without Asdrubal Cabrera.

The Indians' shortstop and No. 3 hitter had to be helped off the field Monday night after he strained his right quadriceps in the fifth inning of a 7-4 loss to the Yankees.

``He got it pretty good,' Indians manager Terry Francona said. ``So, were going to send him back to Cleveland tomorrow to get scanned and, most likely, this is headed toward the DL. But we'll let him get scanned so we know exactly what's going on there.'

Drew Stubbs doubled to break an 0-for-17 slump, moved up on Michael Bourn's infield single and scored on Mike Aviles' sacrifice fly to pull the Indians to 4-2. Cabrera then hit a grounder up the middle that Robinson Cano fielded just to the shortstop side of second base and made a strong throw that just beat him to the bag at first.

``I think I have a chance to be safe on first base, and I put on a little more, and I feel like a little pop in my quad,' Cabrera said.

He was checked out by a trainer and Francona, then tried to walk off the field with an arm around each. But Cabrera had to stop. He then made the remainder of the trip to the dugout putting weight on only his left foot.

``Yes, I feel it the last couple of games,' Cabrera said when asked if the quad was bothering him before Monday.

Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam for his first homer of the season and Brett Gardner had a tiebreaking single in the sixth inning as the Yankees spoiled Nick Swisher's first game back in the Bronx.

Andy Pettitte lasted only 4 2-3 innings in a wild return from the disabled list - his 500th career start. Shawn Kelly (3-0) and three other relievers held the Indians scoreless the rest of the way to help New York win for the second time in nine games. This was the first time they scored more than four runs in that stretch.

``We needed that,' Teixeira said.

Yankees designated hitter Travis Hafner, wearing Swisher's old No. 33, homered against his former team in the seventh off Justin Masterson (8-4), who matched a season high by allowing seven runs.

Masterson had pitched a marvelous four-hitter against New York on May 13 and was 4-2 with a 2.08 ERA against the Yankees - but still hasn't beaten them in the Bronx. He was lifted after allowing Hafner's one-out homer in the seventh.

``Three hanging pitches is kind of the story in the end,' Masterson said. ``

In all, Masterson allowed nine hits and seven runs in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out five and walked three.

``Actually, I think he had good stuff the whole night,' Francona said. ``It looked like we had a chance to get out of it and he left a first pitch fastball that let Teixeira get his arms extended. A big blow.'

Masterson's other mistake was cutting off the throw home on Gardner's two-run single that made it 6-4 in the sixth, which likely would've been on time to get the second runner trying to score. Masterson was in front of catcher Yan Gomes instead of backing him up.

``He made a rare mistake in judgment and it cost us a run there. He knows it,' Francona said. ``He feels worse than anybody. ... He should have been backing up and got himself in no-man's land and he knew the minute he did it.'

After a brief thunderstorm canceled batting practice, the Indians put a runner in scoring position in the first when Aviles singled and went to second on Pettitte's wild pitch. With two outs, Swisher walked up to the plate to a sustained ovation.

He stepped out of the batter's box for a moment with that familiar, toothy grin on his face. A moment later, the switch-hitter settled in from the right side to face a pitcher he called a certain Hall of Famer.

But Swisher wouldn't step out when plate umpire Manny Gonzalez called strike three to end the first inning. Swisher dropped his bat and held his spot in the box while discussing the call with Gonzalez.

Swisher gave the Indians the lead in the third when he hit a grounder to third base with runners on second and third. David Adams fielded the ball and tried to tag Aviles, who was advancing to third. Aviles was called out but Bourn scored from third.

Swisher scored on Carlos Santana's two-run, tying double in the fifth after walking during a stretch in which Pettitte threw 10 straight balls and the second of two wild pitches.

Lyle Overbay got his first outfield putout in his 13-year career to end the bases-loaded threat in the fifth, catching Gomes' shallow popup on the run.

Santana's double chased Pettitte in his first outing since going to the DL on May 17 with a strained muscle in his upper back. Pettitte gave up seven hits and four runs and was left stuck on 249 career wins. He walked three and struck out three, and couldn't protect a three-run lead.

``It's frustrating cause we finally get some runs on the board and then you give the lead back to them,' Pettitte said.

Teixeira gave him that cushion with his eighth career slam in the third off Masterson.

Kelly pitched 1 1-3 innings, Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson one each of hitless relief, and Mariano Rivera retired Swisher on a fly to left with a runner on second for his 20th save in 21 chances.
