PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tyler Cloyd made the call to his dad every prospect dreams of making: He was going to the big leagues.

``It was the first time I ever heard my dad cry on the phone,' he said.

With good reason. His son was now No. 50 for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Hours after that call, after Cloyd was pressed into the start because of Cole Hamels' illness, he walked out to Citizens Bank Park, this time with his wife to snap photos and savor the experience.

``It was awesome,' he said, smiling. ``I couldn't ask for anything more.'

Just a win.

Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer to spoil Cloyd's debut and lead the New York Mets to a 3-2 win over the Phillies on Wednesday night.

Cloyd started the day named the winner of the award given to Philadelphia's top minor league pitching prospect.

He ended it with a loss, but knowing many more starts are ahead.

``My nerves were going crazy,' he said.

With Hamels, a 14-game winner, suffering a gastrointestinal illness, the 25-year-old Cloyd was promoted from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He allowed seven hits, three earned runs and struck out five in six solid innings. Cloyd had 15 total wins in two levels on minor league baseball and led the International League in ERA (2.35), even with a fastball that rarely topped 90s mph.

Cloyd wears like No. 50 - like former Phillies soft-tosser Jamie Moyer. Unlike Moyer, Cloyd can at least run his fastball into the high 80s, and retired 11 of his final 12 batters.

``He looked in control. He looked gutty,' manager Charlie Manuel said. ``He doesn't light up the radar gun.'

Cloyd will surely be in the mix for a spot in the rotation next season as the Phillies try some new looks after their run of five straight NL East titles has ended.

The Phillies are even considering moving second baseman Chase Utley to third. Utley, the Phillies' five-time All-Star second baseman, took grounders at third base several hours before Wednesday night's game. He's open to a position shift to ease the burden on his aching knees, but the idea is still in the early stages.

``I have no problem playing second base. I feel like I can still play at a high level,' Utley said. ``Today was just to give it a try. That was it.'

The Phillies gave Cloyd (0-1) a try once it was clear Hamels was unable to start.

His big mistake came in the third. He allowed a one-out single to Ike Davis before Duda took him deep to right for his 13th homer of the season for a 3-2 lead.

Cloyd, also named this week the International League's Most Valuable Pitcher, will remain in the rotation because right-hander Vance Worley was placed on the disabled list. Worley was shut down on Wednesday and will have elbow surgery next month.

Worley was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA this year after going 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA as a rookie last year. He had a 5.80 ERA in 11 starts since July 3.

The Phillies have lost two straight games to the Mets and are in danger of being passed for third place in the division.

Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins had the only RBIs for the Phillies.

The Mets have won five straight in Philadelphia and seven of eight overall this season.

Mets starter Matt Harvey (3-3) allowed two runs and six hits, striking out six in 6 1-3 innings. He also had an RBI single. The rookie has a 2.76 ERA in seven starts.

``He has extraordinary stuff,' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ``He pitched pretty well.'

Notes: The Mets have won seven games in Philadelphia in a season for the first time since 1972 when they went 8-1 at old Veterans Stadium. ... Worley was bothered this season by bone chips in his right elbow. He insisted they weren't the cause of his second-half slump. ``It's important for him to reset for next year,' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. ... C Carlos Ruiz (foot) could return next week. ... OF Dom Brown (knee) was again held out of the starting lineup because of lingering issues with his knees. ``He's got some soreness in his knees. We've got to try and resolve it,' Amaro said. ... The three-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon with the Mets sending Jonathon Niese (10-7) against Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick (7-9).
