PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Beating the Philadelphia Phillies has been a tough task for most teams. The San Diego Padres haven't found the right formula.

Cole Hamels tossed eight dominant innings and the Phillies beat the Padres for the eighth straight time, 3-1 on Friday night.

Hamels (12-5) allowed one run and three hits, striking out 10. The All-Star lefty bounced back from a rough outing last Saturday against the Mets, retiring the last 10 batters he faced. He's tied with Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens for the most wins in the NL.

``He kept us off-balance,' Padres catcher Rob Johnson said. ``He has four pitches that he throws for strikes and he hits both sides of the plate. You try to get balls up against a guy like that, but it just didn't happen.'

Ryan Madson finished for his 16th save in 17 tries. It was Madson's first save since coming off the disabled list last week.

The major league-leading Phillies (62-36) are a season-best 26 games over .500. They have dominated the Padres recently, including a four-game sweep in San Diego in April.

The Padres' best chance to end the losing streak is Saturday when Kyle Kendrick pitches for the Phillies. All-Stars Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee take the mound in the last two games of the series.

``The entire staff throws strikes, so you've got to be ready,' Padres manager Bud Black said. ``But the first pitch might not be a fastball the way they all locate.'

Padres starter Cory Luebke (3-4) gave up three runs - two earned - and six hits in five innings. He's allowed two earned runs or less in all five of his starts.

On 80s night at the ballpark, it was 98 degrees when the game started. The retro uniforms weren't cool, either. The Phillies wore their maroon pinstripes, and the Padres donned brown-and-yellow jerseys. The highlight of the night came before the sixth inning when the Phillie Phanatic, dressed like rapper Flavor Flav, attempted to break dance.

Luebke said the heat didn't bother him, but he didn't stick around long after throwing 110 pitches.

``You could feel it, but it didn't affect my outing,' he said. ``I just couldn't get ahead of guys.'

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the second on an unearned run. Shane Victorino led off with a hard bouncer that hopped off shortstop Jason Bartlett's glove for an error. Victorino hustled to second on the play. Carlos Ruiz followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center. Cameron Maybin nearly ran it down, but the ball hit off the tip of his glove.

Luebke balked in a run that gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Victorino led off with a single, went to second when Ruiz walked and advanced to third on a flyout. After Victorino scored on the balk, John Mayberry Jr., hit a double down the left-field line to make it 3-0.

That was enough for Hamels. He has allowed three runs or less in 18 of his 21 starts. Hamels lowered his ERA to 2.62 and recorded double-digit strikeouts for the 18th time in his career.

Maybin led off the fifth with a single. He stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Alberto Gonzalez's grounder to third to make it 3-1.

Gonzalez, the second baseman, robbed Ryan Howard of an RBI single in the third with a diving grab of his hard one-hopper. Luebke covered first just ahead of Howard to record the final out.

Notes: Padres 2B Orlando Hudson was with the team a day after a collision with a wall briefly knocked him unconscious. Hudson said he had a slight headache and shoulder soreness, and he's expected to miss a few games. ... Maybin has an eight-game hitting streak. ... Hamels improved to 6-2 against his hometown team. ... A crowd of 45,383 was the 186th consecutive sellout at Citizens Bank Park, including postseason play. ... Bartlett is 9 for his last 18.
