Recap: Padres , Rockies

Game: 1
Venue: Coors Field
Date: May 13, 2011 8:40 PM EDT

DENVER (AP) - Coors Field was pure paradise Friday night for Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin and absolute misery for pitcher Dustin Moseley.

Maybin went 4 for 4 with two homers and three RBIs in San Diego's 12-7 loss to the Colorado Rockies. It was the first career multihomer game for Maybin and it followed a 4-for-6 effort with two RBIs on Wednesday at Milwaukee. He is the first Padres player with consecutive four-hit games since Reggie Sanders on July 2-3, 1999, at Coors Field.

Moseley (1-5) had thrived on the road this season. But that was before the Padres right-hander made his debut at Coors Field, where lasted four innings, his shortest of eight starts this season, and gave up nine hits and six runs.

``I just wasn't sharp,' said Moseley, who threw 99 pitches. ``There's really no other explanation, no excuse that I have. It's just, I wasn't sharp, and it's what happens when you face big league hitters and you're not sharp.'

Moseley took the mound with a major league-leading 0.67 ERA on the road and had not allowed a run away from home in his past 13 2-3 innings. When he left after allowing 11 baserunners and a season-high six earned runs, his road ERA had shot up to 2.35.

``(He) just wasn't keeping the ball down consistently,' Padres manager Bud Black said. ``Got some breaking balls up in the strike zone that they took advantage of. Just couldn't get in any groove whatsoever. It was a tough night for him when he has to throw close to 100 pitches in four innings. That's not his style. He's a pretty efficient strike-thrower. Ball-strike ratio is always pretty good. Today it wasn't.'

Moseley labored through a 40-pitch first, when he threw just 22 strikes and allowed four singles and two walks as the Rockies batted around and scored three runs. He gave up a two-run single to Troy Tulowitzki, followed by a run-scoring single by Todd Helton, and left the bases loaded by getting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa to hit into a force play.

Moseley gave up a one-out single to Jonathan Herrera in the second and he scored when Carlos Gonzalez followed with a triple. Second baseman Alberto Gonzalez's poor relay throw enabled Gonzalez to score.

Moseley allowed his fourth homer in 47 2-3 innings when Tulowitzki hit his 10th of the year with two outs in the fourth.

Maybin homered in the second off De La Rosa (5-1), who allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings, and connected again in the seventh off Matt Belisle. Both homers were opposite-field shots to right. Maybin also bunted for a hit in the second and beat out a swinging bunt in the sixth.

``I was just hitting a lot of balls to the left side of the field, so the approach was to back it up, let the ball travel a little bit, trust my hands and trust my ability,' Maybin said. ``Just try to start using the whole field a little bit more. I think when I'm doing that I feel like I've got a chance to do some good things.'

The 24-year-old Maybin has hit safely in 10 of his past 13 games, raising his average to .273 with five homers and 13 RBIs. A former first-round pick of the Detroit Tigers, Maybin is with his third organization after the Padres obtained him in the offseason from Florida.

``He's a very talented athlete,' Black said. ``We think at where he is in his career at (24) years old, he has the makings of a tremendous all-around player. He's got speed. He can defend. Now it's just a matter of becoming more consistent with the bat. You saw two opposite-field home runs today. You saw a bunt base hit.

``He has a lot of things going in his direction. We're going to give him an opportunity to play. ... We think his style of play fits very well in any park, but especially ours.'

Maybin's second homer cut the Rockies' lead to 9-7, and Black said, ``When it got to 9-7, in this park, you always feel you have a chance. And we had a couple at_bats (left).'

With two outs in the eighth, pinch-hitter Will Venable singled off Rafael Betancourt, and Chris Denorfia followed with a line drive that could have found the gap in right-center except second baseman Herrera was positioned perfectly and made a leaping catch.

``(Denorfia) hit a bullet,' Black said. ``That might've got real interesting. Herrera made a nice play.'

NOTES: Padres 2B Orlando Hudson (strained right hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tucson and play there Sunday and Monday. He will return to the Padres on Tuesday when they play at Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Black said Hudson might continue his rehab assignment at Class-A Lake Elsinore before he is eligible to be reinstated Thursday. ... Brad Hawpe, who played for the Rockies from 2004-10, returned to Coors Field and walked in a pinch-hitting appearance in the sixth. ... Rockies 1B Todd Helton doubled in the sixth and was removed after the inning with left calf tightness.
