Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat Picks, Predictions, Odds

The NBA Play-In Tournament will kick things off on Tuesday night with a compelling Eastern Conference showdown between the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat. Coverage begins from Miami-Dade Arena in South Florida at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT.

ATLANTA HAWKS vs. MIAMI HEAT BETTING PREDICTION

For a pair of former conference finals participants in each of the last two seasons, the Hawks and Heat have both posted surprisingly underwhelming campaigns this year, as Miami finished 7th in the conference with a record of 44-38, while Atlanta finished 8th at 41-41, despite both teams managing to a retain as similar core structure to rosters of years past.

So, what happened to them this season? Truth be told, it appears that both squads tried to double-down on their strengths and force the opposition into their preferred method of attack, but instead, it’s led to a pair of wildly imbalanced operations.

The current iteration of this Heat’ team has never been known to set the world on fire from a scoring perspective, highlighted by Miami ranking 10th and 18th in offensive rating over their previous two campaigns, which was just enough juice to support one of the most dominant defenses in the league. However, relying on defense to such a large extent can be a slippery slope, especially when an offense completely falls off the wagon like Miami’s has this season.

The Heat finished their campaign ranked dead-last in scoring and 25th in offensive rating (109.5 PPG, 113 ORtg), and quite frankly, it’s amazing that they’ve made it this far based on their offensive numbers, considering they put up roughly 35 three-point attempts per game at the fourth-worst clip in the league throughout the year (34.8 3PA, 34% 3FG), which ranks them alongside bottom-dwellers like the Rockets and Spurs in crucial facets of the game.

While on the other hand, the Hawks carry a very similar level of imbalance within their style of play, but they operate on the opposite side of the spectrum, as Atlanta enters the Play-In Tournament ranked Top 10 in offensive rating and Bottom 10 in defensive rating (116.6 ORtg, 116.3 DRtg), which leads to similar, and oftentimes, more pressing concerns.

There’s no denying the fact that Miami has been a mess all season, however, there’s also no denying the offensive talent on this Heat’ roster, and it certainly won’t be surprising if, all of a sudden, Jimmy Butler and co. snap out of their shooting slump and return to elite form in a timely manner.

Whereas, Atlanta doesn’t appear to boast that same potential heading into this one. Sure, if the Hawks get hot and all the shots are falling for them, they’re capable of beating Miami on any given night; but as long as Trae Young remains the focal point of this team, the Hawks will always have a gaping hole at the defensive end that’s almost impossible to compensate for, and I expect Erik Spoelstra’s crew to exploit that at home on Tuesday night.
