The New York Yankees signed Gerrit Cole to a record deal in December 2019. Cole hasn’t been quite as sensational as he was in 2019 when he led the AL in ERA, ERA+, strikeouts, FIP, and K/9, but he has continued to make batters miss at a high rate. He was an All-Star that led the AL with 16 wins last year, and he is in the prime of his career.

It was a disappointing 2021 campaign for Shane Bieber. The 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner was electric over 12 starts in the shortened season, but he only made 16 starts last year because of injury. The star of the rebranded Cleveland Guardians has stated that he feels great, but there are reasons to feel down about his Cy Young chances in 2022. Bieber’s velocity was down at the end of last year, and his wOBA is above league average. Robbie Ray is unlikely to repeat as a Cy Young winner in 2022. Ray had by far the best season of his career in 2021, leading the AL in ERA, ERA+, innings pitched, WHIP, and strikeouts. He has a high K/9, but there are real concerns about his durability.

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander has only thrown six innings in the past two seasons, but he has some of the best stuff in the game. Verlander is 39 years old, so age and durability are concerns when weighing his Cy Young chances, but he can’t be discounted.

If you’re looking for a longshot that could pay off, Tarik Skubal is currently 35-1 to win the AL Cy Young Award. Skubal has shown impressive stuff in each of his first two seasons, and Detroit should be one of the breakout teams of the 2022 season. He has a great fastball, an above average slider, and a sneaky good changeup.
