New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays Betting Prediction

The New York Yankees enter this matchup first in the AL East standings, 12 games ahead of the second place Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees went 2-1 SU in their most recent series against Toronto and have won eight of their last 10 games. The bullpen has been fantastic this season, ranking first in ERA (2.84), first in WHIP (1.06), and first in opponents' batting average (.211). New York’s offense is also having a solid season, ranking third in on base percentage (.327), second in slugging percentage (.442), and second in runs per game (5.13). Right fielder Aaron Judge is having an All-Star caliber season with a batting average of .301 (75-249), 25 home runs, and 50 RBIs.

Tampa Bay is currently fourth in the AL East standings, 13 games behind the Yankees for first place. Prior to the start of this series, the Rays went 1-2 SU in a three-game series with the Orioles and have lost seven of their last 10 games. The offense has struggled over that stretch, averaging just 2.9 runs per game. This is well below their season average of 4.02 runs per game. Tampa Bay’s bullpen has seen much more success, ranking fourth in ERA (.3.16), third in WHIP (1.11), and fifth in opponents' batting average (.221). The first baseman Ji-Man Choi has done a nice job bringing in the runs with a batting average of .286 (44-154), six home runs, and 34 RBIs.

This series is tied at one game apiece after Tampa Bay secured a victory on Tuesday night. This has not been a common trend this season as the Yankees are 6-3 SU against the Rays this season. I like the Yankees to bounce back in game-three. Jordan Montgomery has been solid on the mound this season, not giving up more than three runs in an outing. Shane Baz on the other hand has seen action in just two games and I expect the Yankees offense to see plenty of success against him. Backing the Yankees moneyline here.

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays – Pitching Matchup

New York: Jordan Montgomery (3-1, 2.73 ERA)

New York lefty Jordan Montgomery toes the rubber for his 13th start of the season as he looks to improve on a 3-1 mark and 2.73 ERA. The left-hander has put together a 0.95 WHIP to go along with 56 strikeouts and 11 walks in 72.2 innings of work. The 29-year old left-hander lifted the Yankees to win on the road over the Toronto Blue Jays on June 17, 2022. Montgomery tossed six innings in the 3-12 win by Toronto Blue Jays, while giving up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Montgomery owns a 1-1 road record this season in six starts away from Yankee Stadium. In those away outings, he has posted a 2.87 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, eight walks, and 24 strikeouts in 31.1 innings of work.

Tampa Bay: Shane Baz (0-1, 5.40 ERA)

Shane Baz will make his second start of the season for Tampa Bay, who’s hoping to find some traction after posting a 0-1 record and 5.40 ERA thus far, while tallying a 0.96 WHIP, three walks, and nine strikeouts. Baz received a no-decision in his most recent start against the Baltimore Orioles, as Tampa Bay’s right-hander surrendered runs on two hits, and seven strikeouts during the Rays’ 1-0 road loss on June 17, 2022. Baz hasn’t yet had a home start this season.
