White Sox-Angels Going Under Again?
The Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels have played a pair of 'under' games in the first two outings in their four-game set. The Angels have dropped both home games, averaging just 2.5 runs per contest, while allowing just 4.5 runs per game. With the exception of a surprising 14-run outburst against the defending champion Houston Astros on Sunday, the Angels have posted three or fewer runs in seven of their past 10 outings.

In Wednesday's battle, 'Big Game' James Shields will toe the slab and he will be opposed by Tyler Skaggs for the Halos. The 'under' has been the trend for both of the pitchers lately. The 'under' is 8-1-1 in Shields' past 10 outings against teams with a losing overall record, 12-4-1 in his past 17 starts overall and 7-3 in his past 10 starts against American League West opponents. The under has also gone 3-1-1 in the past five road outings, while going 5-0 in his past five appearances on Wednesday, for whatever that's worth. In addition, the under has hit in five of the past six on the road for the Pale Hose, while going 8-3 in their past 11 against a left-handed starter. The under is also 5-1 in their past six against AL West foes.

For the Angels, the under is 18-7-2 in the past 27 games overall, while going 7-1 in their past eight contests against AL Central opponents. In addition, the under is 4-1 in their past five home outings, while going 15-6-3 in the past 24 vs. RHP. For Skaggs, the under is 5-2 in his past seven outings, and 4-1 in his past five against a team with a losing record. In this series, the under is 11-4-1 in the past 16 meetings, including 5-2-1 in the past eight at the Big A.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, July 25
Luis Cessa will take the ball on Wednesday afternoon for matinee action. The under has connected in seven of Cessa's past eight outings and 5-1 in his past six on the road. The under is also 22-8-2 in New York's past 32 games against a right-handed starting pitcher. The under is also 11-4-1 in their past 16 on the road against teams with a winning overall record. For Tampa, the over is 6-2 in their past eight overall, but the under is 9-2 in the past 11 against American League East clubs. The under is also 7-3-1 in their past 11 at home against a right-handed starter, while going 5-1 in Nathan Eovaldi's past six against a team with a winning record.

*** (NOTE - Eovaldi was traded to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon after this column was published.)

The Tigers and Royals will have a battle of southpaws going when Matthew Boyd and Danny Duffy square off. The under is 20-8-1 in Detroit's past 29 on the road, while going 6-2 in Boyd's past eight assignments away from home. The under is also 13-6-2 in their past 21 against AL Central foes, and 5-1-1 in their past seven vs. LHP. For the Royals, the under is 3-0-1 in their past four inside the division, and 14-6 in their past 20 vs. LHP. However, the over is 5-1 in Duffy's past six starts at Kauffman Stadium. The over is also 4-1 in Duffy's past five at home vs. the Tigers, and the over is 4-1 in Boyd's past five road outings against the Royals.

Betting On The Wind
The wind will be blowing out at an 11-14 mph clip for the game between the Dodgers and Phillies. That might be helpful for their tired batters, too, after the teams went 16 innings last night. That's the only MLB city where winds will be a factor.

Thursday, July 26
The Yankees will roll out Sonny Gray to face the lowly Kansas City Royals. The under is an impressive 6-2-1 in his past nine outings dating back to June 1. The Royals will counter with RHP Jakob Junis, with the 'under' cashing in three of his past four.

The Marlins host the Nationals to kick off a new set. These teams met in a four-game series from July 5-8, and the 'over' went 3-1. However, in three games at Marlins Park from May 25-27, the 'under' went 3-1 with the Marlins averaging just 2.7 runs per game while allowing 6.0 runs per contest. The under is 4-1-2 in the past seven meetings in South Florida, and 6-2-2 in the past 10 at Marlins Park.

Veteran Bartolo Colon and the Rangers will host Trevor Cahill and the Athletics on Thursday. The under is 6-3-1 over Colon's past 10 appearances, including a push on the total in his most recent outing against Oakland when he allowed just two earned runs over five innings June 6 at home. The under is 3-1-1 in the past five outings for Cahill. Can Texas slow down the Oakland offense on Thursday? They allowed 14.0 runs per game in the first two outings on Monday and Tuesday.

Friday, July 27

The O's host the Rays in Game 2 of a four-game set. The last time these clubs met in a four-game set at Oriole Park the 'over' connected three times. The O's won three of those games, averaging 8.8 runs per game during the set, while the Rays average 4.5 runs per contest. Eight of the past nine meetings in Baltimore have resulted in an 'over', too.

CC Sabathia takes the ball for the Yankees in Friday's battle against the Royals. 'Under' bettors have been cashing in on the Hefty Lefty, as the 'under' is 7-0-1 across his past eight starts, including a perfect 4-0 in his past four assignments at home.

LHP Jason Vargas pitches for the Mets in the Steel City, and he brings an 8.60 ERA into the battle. Not good. Well, not good unless you like 'over' results. The over is 3-2-1 in his six road outings since coming over from the Royals, and he has allowed at least four earned runs in six of his past 10 appearances overall.

RHP Anthony DeSclafani hits the rubber for a home meeting with the Phillies. The 'over' has been the rule lately for the Cincinnati righty, going 6-1 over his past seven appearances.

RHP Marcus Stroman of the Blue Jays started the season on a very slow note, but lately he has pieced things together. Total bettors are taking notice, as the 'under' is a perfect 8-0 over his past eight outings.
