St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Betting Predictions

The St. Louis Cardinals enter this matchup second in the NL Central standings, one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place. The Cardinals are 1-1 SU against the Phillies in this series and are 5-5 SU over their last 10 games. The Cardinals failed to capitalize in game-one, with seven hits and three runs while going 1-8 with runners in scoring position. They were more productive in game-two on Saturday with nine hits and seven runs scored. St. Louis’s bullpen has not looked great in either game, allowing seven hits and five runs in game one and six runs on 12 hits in game two. Right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright is scheduled to start Sunday. Wainwright is 6-5 in 15 games this season with an ERA of 3.07 and has given up 88 hits, 31 earned runs, and struck out 76 batters in 91.0 innings.

Philadelphia is third in the NL East standings, seven and a half games behind the New York Mets for first place. The Phillies have gone 5-5 SU over their last 10 games including 1-1 SU in this series with the Cardinals. The Phillies scored five runs on seven hits in game one and six runs on 12 hits in game two. This is nothing new as the Phillies are the fourth highest scoring team with an average of 4.82 runs per game. The bullpen was solid in game-one, allowing just three runs but struggled in game two, allowing the Cardinals seven runs on nine hits. This is well above their season ERA of 3.80. The right-hander Zach Wheeler is expected to take the mound Sunday. Wheeler is 6-4 in 14 games this season with an ERA of 2.89 and has given up 70 hits, 26 earned runs, while striking out 94 batters in 81.0 innings.

This should be a good game throughout with Wheeler and Wainwright taking the mound. Both guys have a ton of experience and should be able to give their teams 6.0-8.0 innings. The total has gone under in five of the last seven between these two teams and assuming the relievers for both sides do not choke I l think that is the best play here. Backing the under.

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Analysis

After a 7-6 loss on Saturday the Phillies are now 41-38 SU, 39-40 ATS, and have an O/U record of 44-33-2. The total has gone over in four of Philadelphia’s last six games. Going against this trend, the total has gone under in five of their last seven games against the Cardinals. The Phillies are 8-4 SU in their last 12 games at home against St. Louis and 21-20 SU at home this season.

After a slow start to the season, the Phillies offense has managed to turn things around. As a team Philadelphia has a batting average of .247 (11th), on base percentage .317 (15th), slugging percentage of .417 (7th) and have scored 381 runs (4th). Third baseman Alec Bohm is having a productive season for the Phillies with a batting average of .265 (75-283), four home runs, and 27 RBIs. St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Betting Conclusion

Expect a low scoring game with Wainwright and Wheeler taking the mound. I give the Phillies a slight edge in this matchup, but not worth backing them at (–135). Instead, I think taking the under is the play here with these two veterans getting the start. Backing the under in this matchup.
