New York Mets vs. New York Yankees Betting Prediction

The New York Mets enter this matchup first in the NL East standings with a three-game lead over the second place Atlanta Braves. The Mets lost game-one of this series on Monday night and are 5-5 SU over their last 10 games. New York has had a couple of rough stretches throughout the season but have been playing good baseball for the most part. The offense ranks well against the rest of the league with a batting average of .258 (26th), on base percentage of .329 (2nd), slugging percentage of .409 (10th) and have scored 590 total runs (4th). The Met’s bullpen has been solid as well, holding opponents to a batting average of .236 (9th), have a WHIP of 1.19 (5th) and have a team ERA of 3.57 (5th). Right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker (10-3, 3.36 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound Tuesday.

The Yankees are currently first in the AL East standings with an eight-game lead over the second place Tampa Bay Rays. New York managed to beat the Mets on Monday night but have really struggled since returning from the All-Star break with a 10-20 SU record. While it may not be time to hit the panic button just yet, this team went from dominating everyone to struggling against everyone but the Royals. The offense has averaged just two runs per game over their last 10 and were shutout in three of those matchups. The bullpen has been a bit better, allowing opponents 3.2 runs per game over their last 10, but they still just do not seem like the same team they were in the first half of the season. The right-hander Frankie Montas (4-10, 3.87 ERA) is expected to start for the Yankees Tuesday.

I like the Mets to take game-two of this series. Montas has not been great this season by any means, and I expect the Mets offense to have more success than they saw on Monday night. Also, until the Yankees can figure out their offensive struggles it is tough to have much faith in them going up against a guy like Taijuan Walker. Backing the Mets moneyline in game-two.

New York Mets vs. New York Yankees – Pitching Matchup

Mets: Taijuan Walker (10-3, 3.37 ERA)

Mets’ right-hander Taijuan Walker takes the mound for his 22nd start of the season. Walker looks to improve on a 10-3 record and 3.37 ERA in 112.1 innings, while striking out 85, walking 33 batters, and posting a 1.20 WHIP. Walker received a no-decision in his most recent start against the Braves, as he allowed zero runs on one hit across just two innings the Mets’ 5-0 road loss on August 16th. Walker is 6-2 with a 3.27 ERA across this season’s 12 starts on the road, which includes 18 walks, 52 strikeouts, and a 1.22 WHIP over 63.1 innings of action.

Yankees: Frankie Montas (4-10, 3.87 ERA)

Frankie Montas is on the hill for the Yankees in this contest as he makes his 23rd start of the season hoping to build some positive momentum. He comes in 4-10 with a 3.87 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, 34 walks and 117 strikeouts over 118.2 innings of work this season. The 29-year-old right-hander couldn’t lift the Yankees to a home win over Toronto on August 18th. In his losing start, Montas tossed six innings in the 2-9 defeat, while giving up six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Montas is 2-6 with a 2.63 ERA across 15 home starts this season, which includes 24 walks, 85 strikeouts, and a 1.13 WHIP over 78.2 innings of action.
