Arizona is also eight games behind the Padres and Phillies for a wild card berth so while they have not been mathematically eliminated, things are not looking great for Arizona making the postseason. Despite that, the Diamondbacks have been playing solid baseball as of late, winning eight of their last 10 including game one of this series. The offense has averaged 6.3 runs over that stretch, well above their season average of 4.44 runs per game. The bullpen has also played well over their last 10, holding opponents to three runs or less six times. The left-hander Tommy Henry (3-3, 4.83 ERA) is scheduled to start game-three on Wednesday.  

The Padres enter this matchup second in the NL West standings, 19.0 games behind the Dodgers for first place. Despite the division being out of reach, San Diego is currently third in the NL Wild card race with a two-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Padres have lost three straight after Monday night’s loss and are 6-4 SU over their last 10 games. With how well Arizona has been playing over their last 10 games there is definitely value in backing the Diamondbacks here. However, with Darvish taking the mound for the Padres I think the San Diego runline is the play here. Darvish went 7.0 innings while giving up just two hits and zero runs in his most recent start against the Dodgers and I expect him to have similar success in this matchup.
