Celtics vs Pacers Picks & Prediction

The top two scoring teams in the NBA reached this year’s Eastern Conference Finals, with the Pacers ranked 1st at 123.3 points per game and the Celtics ranked 2nd at 120.6 – and while the overall level of competitiveness may be a bit underwhelming with Indiana (+8000) trailing 3-0 entering Game 4, these teams certainly haven’t disappointed in the scoring department thus far, considering all three matchups of the ECF have gone over the total at an average of 240.6 points per game.

The most recent meeting was the lowest scoring of the bunch at a final score of 114-111 (O 220.5). However, the slight dip in scoring can primarily be attributed to a downtick in 3-point shooting for both teams, as the Celtics made only 16 of their 46 (34.8%) attempts from long range in Game 3, while the Pacers shot 5-of-22 (22.7%) from downtown. Which is a good sign for “over” bettors moving forward, considering Indiana and Boston are both shooting north of 37% from 3-point territory in the playoffs, and Game 3 still went over the total, while both squads should be expected to regress toward the mean in that department.

Quite frankly, Game 3 looked like it was going WAY over the total in the early stages. The Celtics and Pacers combined for 126 points in the first half of the recent meeting between these two teams, as Indiana went to the break with a 69-57 lead. However, the game nearly stayed under the total due to the Pacers scoring only 42 points on 38% from the field and 14% from 3-point range in the second half. But fortunately, Boston managed to come through with 33 points in the fourth quarter to help lift Game 3 over the number.

Every time these two teams have crossed paths this year, it’s been nothing short of a track meet. They combined for an average of 245.8 points per game in five regular season meetings, with the winning team scoring 118+ points in all five of those contests – and that trend has continued in this series, with an average of over 240 points per game scored in the first three matchups of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Plain and simple, the Pacers stink at the defensive end of the floor, and that’s why they never stood a chance against Boston. The Pacers ranked 27th in points allowed per game (120.2) and 24th in defensive rating (118) during the regular season, and their poor defensive play has continued throughout the playoffs, as Indiana ranks 15th out of 16 teams in points allowed (113.3) and 14th in defensive rating (120.9) since the start of the postseason, which includes an average of 124 points per game surrendered to Boston in the first three matchups of this series.

With that in mind, however, the Pacers didn’t reach this point strictly via the luck of the draw, and I expect them to show a spark of life at home on Monday night. However, that “spark” isn’t going to come from their defense. But, sometimes the best defense can also be “great offense” – and this Indiana team can light up the scoreboard against pretty much anybody, highlighted by the Pacers shooting 51% from the field and 37% from 3-point range since the start of the playoffs, which includes solid clips of 52% and 34% in the first three games of this series, despite trailing 3-0. Look for a fourth straight “over” to cash in Game 4.
