Nuggets vs Lakers Picks & Prediction

First things first, I want to congratulate the Los Angeles Lakers on finally snapping their 11-game head-to-head losing streak against Denver on Saturday night. The Nuggets are a world-class basketball team, and beating them in any matchup is no easy feat. But for a variety of reasons, I believe we’ll see Denver bounce back in commanding fashion and complete the gentleman’s sweep in Game 5 on Monday, despite each matchup in this series being pretty competitive thus far.

The Nuggets are certainly no strangers to the occasional mental lapse early in the playoffs. As dominant as their run through last year’s WCF and Finals was – winning both series in a total of nine games – the Nuggets actually struggled a little bit out of the gate last postseason. The Nuggets lost a road game to Minnesota in the opening round of last year’s playoffs, and then barely escaped with a victory in Game 5 via a final score of 112-109. They also lost two road games to Phoenix in the second round before eventually catching fire and winning 10-of-11 games the rest of the way to win the title. 

None of those losses came at home though, as the Nuggets posted a perfect record of 6-0 at Ball Arena in the first two rounds of last year’s playoffs, with five of those six wins coming by margins of 9+ points – and they continued their home postseason dominance with two straight wins over LAL to open this series.

The Lakers’ struggles from 3-point range persisted in Game 4, as they knocked down just 8-of-26 (31%) attempts from beyond the arc in Saturday’s contest. Fortunately for LAL, however, the Nuggets didn’t exactly put their best foot forward on defense with a 3-game lead in the series either, and the Lakers took full advantage of it by shooting 52% from all areas of the floor combined.

All good things must come to an end though, and I believe the time is now for this series. The Lakers and Nuggets met three times during the regular season, and Denver won all three of those contests by a margin of 8+ points, with two of those victories coming on the road, where Denver is known to struggle – yielding records of 33-8 at home and 24-17 away this season, and 34-7 at home and 19-22 away last season.

The Nuggets are the best team in the West, and they dominate their home floor. The number on the spread for this contest is big – maybe a little bit too big – but the Nuggets have proven time-after-time they have all the answers for beating the current iteration of this Lakers team, and I expect them to do so yet again in commanding fashion after a slip-up their last time out. I’ll lay the points with Denver at home in Game 5.
