Mavericks vs Clippers Picks & Prediction

The Clippers earned the four-seed in the West with a record of 51-31 this season – and for brief stretches, they looked like legitimate contenders to win the conference, finishing 4th in offensive rating and 7th in overall net rating.

However, you certainly wouldn’t know it based on their production during the back half of the season, considering the Clippers closed their campaign with a bumpy 17-16 skid in their last 33 contests, while ranking 15th in offensive rating and 23rd in defensive rating during that span – and the forecast appeared to be growing increasingly dull with Kawhi Leonard listed as questionable for Game 1 and no official timetable for return.

Like a opossum playing dead in the middle of the street though, LAC immediately flipped a switch and kicked it into high gear in their first matchup of the playoffs, as the Clippers erupted for 109 points on 46% from the field and knocked down 18-of-36 three-point attempts on the way to a commanding 12-point home victory in Game 1 on Sunday afternoon.

So the question is, will the Clippers keep their foot on the gas pedal in Game 2? Or was LAC’s dominant performance in Game 1 just a flash in the pan? I’ll let you be the judge…

James Harden was the showstopper for the Clippers in Game 1. Harden led the team in scoring with 28 points on 47% from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point range in Sunday’s victory – marking just the fifth time Harden has hit 6+ three-pointers in a game in 73 outings for LAC.

Harden wasn’t the only one red-hot from downtown in Game 1 though. Terrence Mann, Amir Coffey, Norman Powell, and Russell Westbrook also combined to knock down 8-of-13 three-point attempts in Sunday’s contest, which obviously helped lift the Clippers to victory.

On the other side of that same coin, scoring is rarely an issue for Dallas with the superstar duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving at the helm, as the Mavericks earned the five-seed in the West with a record of 50-32 behind an offense that ranks top-10 in both offensive rating and points per game. However, offense was a struggle for Dallas in Game 1 of this series, as the Mavs scored just 97 points on 39% from the field and 30% from three-point range in Sunday’s loss.

Defense is always an issue for Dallas though, highlighted by the Mavericks finishing the season ranked 20th in points allowed per game and 18th in defensive rating. So, the ideal way to beat Dallas would be to stand toe-to-toe and match their production at the offensive end of the floor – which wasn’t an enormous task for LAC in Game 1, but the Clippers certainly did that and then some in Sunday’s series opener.

As we’ve quickly come to realize, regular season results aren’t always the best indicators of playoff success. However, it seemed like Dallas found a spark at the defensive end during the final month or so of the regular season, and the result was immaculate, highlighted by the Mavs closing their campaign with a stellar 16-4 run, which can mainly be attributed to their defense leading the entire NBA in defensive rating during that time frame.

And on top of that, very few teams have experienced highs-and-lows to the extent that the Clippers have this season. At various points, the Clips have looked like top shelf contenders in the West – most notably, when they went on a 12-2 run spanning January and February, while leading the entire NBA in offensive rating by a comfortable margin during that span.

So, it’s no secret that the Clippers possess the ability to look like the best team in basketball on any given night.

With that said though, the Clippers still ranked 18th in defensive rating during their best stretch of the year, which is on-par with the fact that they rank 17th on the season – and their defense only got worse down the homestretch, considering they rank 23rd in defensive rating since February 6.

The Clippers managed to flip a switch and return to peak form in Game 1. But can they capture lightning in a bottle and sustain a similar level of production all the way through this series? They couldn’t during the regular season. However, if LAC goes out and wins another game by hitting 50% of 35+ three-point attempts again, I think you just have to tip your cap to them.

If the law of averages tells us anything though, it’s that the Clippers are due to come crashing back down to earth sooner rather than later. And I still expect them to come up short in this series against a Mavericks team that is fully capable of matching their best effort at both ends of the floor.
