Indiana vs. Purdue Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Indiana Hoosiers have almost certainly done enough to make it to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season under Mike Woodson. There was some skepticism when Woodson was hired as he is a long-time NBA coach that had never been a coach at the collegiate level, but he has already been more successful than Archie Miller and is more well-liked than Tom Crean.

Woodson has already led the Hoosiers past the Purdue Boilermakers once this season, and a second win over Purdue would really help Indiana's seeding for March Madness.

We will see the Purdue Boilermakers play their penultimate home game of the regular season on Saturday, February 25, 2023, when they welcome the Indiana Hoosiers to their part of the state. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX from Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Purdue Boilermakers Betting Prediction

After being the No. 1 ranked team in the country for seven weeks this season, Purdue has fallen off over the last few weeks. The Boilermakers have dropped to No. 5 in the most current AP Poll, as they have lost three of their last five games beginning with that defeat at the hands of Indiana in Bloomington on February 4.

However, all three of those losses came on the road, and it's been a different story for Purdue at home. This team smashed both Iowa and Ohio State at the Mackey Center by a combined 41 points. As long as Purdue gets another strong performance out of Zach Edey, the Boilermakers should get the win and the cover.

Indiana Hoosiers Betting Analysis

This is a well-rounded team. Indiana ranks 25th in offensive efficiency and 43rd in defensive efficiency. Trayce Jackson-Davis exemplifies that two-way mentality with his play, as he leads the Hoosiers in points (20.5 PPG), rebounds (11.1 RPG), and blocks (2.9 BPG). Jackson-Davis is a very efficient shooter, making 57.5% of his field goals, and he is an old school player that doesn't toy with a long-range game. However, he will draw the unenviable assignment of taking on Edey in the low post.

The Hoosiers are also one of the best three-point shooting teams in college basketball. Indiana is making 38% of its threes, and Miller Kopf is one of the best perimeter shooters in the country. Kopf is sinking 46.8% of his treys on over 100 attempts. Tamar Bates is knocking down 40% of his threes on 80 attempts, and Trey Galloway is 50% from downtown on his 48 attempts.

Xavier Johnson was one of the stars of Indiana through the first half of the season. Unfortunately, the senior hurt his foot in the Kansas game, and he has yet to return to the lineup. Woodson stated earlier this week that Johnson hasn't progressed enough in rehab to see the court against Purdue, so Indiana will rely on Jackson-Davis and Jalen Hood-Schifino.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Analysis

Its been fun to watch Zach Edey dominate in the block this season. Edey looks to be well on his way to being named the consensus national player of the year even despite Purdue's recent struggles as he is averaging 22.1 PPG and 12.7 RPG.

The 7'4 center is sinking 61.9% of his field goals and is making 74.4% of his threes too, so he's not a big man you can punish by sending to the line. In the first meeting between these teams, Edey almost single-handedly led the Boilermakers to a victory. He went 15 of 19 from the floor for 33 points, and he grabbed 18 rebounds (10 offensive). The issue was that the rest of the Boilermakers combined to make just 40% of their field goals, and they turned the ball over 16 times.

Freshman Fletcher Loyer has really struggled in recent weeks. Loyer is still the second leading scorer on Purdue, averaging 11.8 PPG, but he is now shooting under 38% from the floor. The youngster has seemingly lost confidence in his shot with just 14 points over the Boilermakers' last three games, and this is a player that head coach Matt Painter was planning to rely on in March.

The good news for Purdue is that another freshman guard is stepping up at the right time. Braden Smith was an unheralded recruit coming out of high school, but he has shown he can get hot for stretches. Smith sunk 8 of 10 shots in the win over Iowa, and he went 8 of 12 from the floor against Maryland last Thursday.
