Cincinnati Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Predictions

Cincinnati opened their season winning two of four against the Braves followed by two straight losses to the Cleveland Guardians. The Reds have struggled to get things going on offense with a team average of .198. From a pitching standpoint the Reds have also struggled, with an ERA of 4.85. The right-hander Vladimir Guiterrez is expected to take the mound for the Reds on Friday. Guiterrez is 0-1 this season, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.

The Dodgers lost two of three to the Rockies to open the season, but managed to bounce back winning their next two against the Twins.  Pitching has been very good for the most part, including 7.0 perfect innings by Clayton Kershaw in their second game with the Twins. The bats could use some work but those should get going as the season progresses. Right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin is scheduled to start on Friday. Gonsolin has seen action in one game this season and gave up 5 hits, 1 earned run, and struck out 3 batters in 3.0 innings pitched.

It’s tough to find reason to back Cincinnati in this one. They have struggled in the past playing at LA and have also struggled to hit the ball this season. The Dodgers pitching will be too much for the Reds to handle and playing cross country doesn’t help. I don’t think there is much value in the Dodgers moneyline at –242, so I will be playing the run line of LA –1.5.

Cincinnati Reds Betting Analysis

  • SU: 2-5
  • RL: 4-3
  • O/U: 5-1-1

After their first two series, Cincinnati is 2-4 SU, 4-2 ATS, and have an O/U record of 4-1-1. Going back to last season the total has gone over in 10 of Cincinnati’s past 15 games. Following this trend, the total has gone over in eight of their last 11 against NL opponents. The Reds have struggled when playing on the road against the Dodgers, with a SU record of 6-13 in their last 19 meetings.

Cincinnati’s offense ranks towards the bottom of the MLB. As a team they have a batting average of .198 (26th), on base percentage of .268 (28th), slugging percentage of .318 (26th), five HR (18th), and 27 total runs (10th). Right fielder Tyler Naquin has led the way on offense with a batting average of .389 (7-18), one HR, and three RBI’s. Star players Joey Votto (1B) and Jonathan India (3B) will need to get things going if this team wants to see any success. Votto and India currently have a combined batting average of .167 and 4 RBIs.

The Reds pitching ranks about the same as the offense. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .253 (24th), have an ERA of 4.85 (24th), given up nine home runs (23rd), and allowed 32 total runs (25th). Right-handed pitcher Vladimir Guiterrez is expected to take the mound for the Reds on Friday. Guiterrez is 0-1 this season, allowing sox hits and two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. Last season Guiterrez went 9-6 with an ERA of 4.74 and struck out 88 batters in 114.0 innings pitched.

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Analysis

  • SU: 4-2
  • RL: 4-2
  • O/U: 2-3-1

Entering this series with the Reds, LA is 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS, and have an O/U record of 1-3-1. The Dodgers will be happy to finally play at home as they ended last season 18-2 in their last 20 games at home. The total has gone under in three of LA’s five games this season. Going against this trend, the total has gone over in five of their last seven games against Cincinnati.

The Dodgers bats have started off slower than expected, but still rank within the top half of the league. As a team LA has a batting average of .247 (8th), on base percentage of .322 (10th), slugging percentage of .393 (12th), six HR (14th), and 25 total runs (T-16th). Second baseman Gavin Lux has been great thus far with a batting average of .353 (6-17), one HR, and five RBI’s. Justin Turner, Mookie Bets, Cody Bellinger, and Freddie Freeman are still trying to get things going as they have just one HR combined.

The pitching has been solid to start the year for the Dodgers. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .193 (1st), have an ERA of 4.0 (16th), given up three home runs (3rd), and 17 total runs (5th). The right hander Tony Gonsolin is expected to take the mound Friday. Gonsolin has seen action in one game this season and gave up five hits, one earned run, and struck out three batters in 3.0 innings pitched. Last season Gonsolin went 4-1 with an ERA of 3.23 and struck out 65 batters in 55.2 innings of work.

Key Players to Watch

  • CIN: Joey Votto - 1B (Last Game: 1-4, 2B)
  • CIN: Jonathan India - 3B (Last Game: 2-3)
  • LAD: Mookie Betts - OF (Last Game: 2-5, RBI)
  • LAD: Freddie Freeman - 1B (Last Game: 2-5, 2B, 2 R)

Probable Pitchers

  • CIN: Vladimir Gutierrez - RHP (0-1, 4.15 ERA, 4 K, 1.85 WHIP)
  • LAD: Tony Gonsolin - RHP (0 SV, 3.00 ERA, 3 K, 2.00 WHIP)

Cincinnati Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Conclusion

Cincinnati’s hitting ranks in the bottom half of the MLB while the Dodgers pitching ranks amongst the best in the league. I think there is a bit of value in playing Reds +1.5 (+104 at FanDuel), but until Cincinnati shows any kind production from their top players, I can't find any reason to back them. I think the best bet here is Dodgers –1.5 (-120 at DraftKings).
