MLB Injury Odds Report for Monday May 30

The two biggest franchises in baseball are the favorites to win the World Series after the first two months of the season. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been considered the top team throughout 2022, but the New York Yankees were originally behind the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Astros in the AL pennant race odds. The Bronx Bombers are down to +600 to win the AL, and they already have a 4.5 game lead in the AL East despite dropping their last two games to the Tampa Bay Rays.

NEW YORK METS

It’s starting to feel more and more like the New York Mets might be a team of destiny this year. The Mets already have an 8.5 game lead over the NL East, and they now have the second lowest odds to win the NL behind the Dodgers. What’s been even more impressive is that the Mets have been doing this without two Cy Young Award winners in Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer.

DeGrom has yet to take the mound this season as he continues to deal with a shoulder injury that is expected to keep him out for at least one more month. Scherzer made eight starts before being shut down with an oblique injury, and he is likely to miss another month too. Fortunately, the rest of the rotation has picked up the slack, and this offense has been solid. Starter Tylor Megill will return to the rotation next week to give the Mets another boost, and James McCann will come back in another few weeks.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

The best team in baseball is the Los Angeles Dodgers. They had the shortest World Series odds at the start of the year after putting together the most dangerous lineup we’ve seen in two decades, but the pitching staff has been the story for this team. Los Angeles is giving up just 3.04 runs per game, and the Dodgers already have a run differential north of 100.

LA continues to thrive despite the loss of a ton of arms. Starters Clayton Kershaw, Andrew Heaney, Danny Duffy, and Dustin May are all on the IL, and top relievers Victor Gonzalez and Blake Treinen are out for an extended period of time. There are serious concerns regarding whether or not the rotation and bullpen can continue to perform this well without so many pieces though.

TAMPA BAY RAYS

It’s never going to be pretty for the Tampa Bay Rays, but this franchise has taken the title from the Oakland Athletics as the small market team that can do the most with the least. Tampa Bay’s World Series odds have fallen from the start of the season, but the Rays are still in line to make the playoffs despite an extremely thin bullpen.

Nick Anderson, Pete Fairbanks, JT Chargois, and Andrew Kittredge are all on the IL. Kittredge is expected to be back by the end of the week, but three of Tampa Bay’s other top relievers are likely to miss at least another month. Young starters Tyler Glasnow and Brendan McKay are still recovering from major injuries, and Shane Baz and Luis Patino have been sidelined too, forcing the Rays to put a lot of mileage on a bullpen without some of its best arms.
